    The energy boom that has hit western states such as Texas, Wyoming, Utah and western Colorado has had relatively little effect on Phillips County so far, but this could soon be changing. According to Phillips County Courthouse records, there are currently 12 producing natural gas wells in the county, with 36 new permits to drill having been issued within the last year.
    Eighteen home gardens from Amherst to Haxtun in Phillips County were featured in the first annual Parade of Home Gardens Aug. 19.

Aug. 27, 1992

    Brenda Dubbert will take over management of the Holyoke Swimming Pool next week, returning to her hometown pool where she learned to swim as a toddler. The decision to hire Dubbert was made by Holyoke City Council at its Aug. 18 meeting. She replaces former pool manager Paul McConachie, who resigned earlier this month.
    Weather observer Dale Anderson recorded 2 inches of rain in the Sunday and Monday rainfall in Holyoke. The temps climbed to 92 degrees Aug. 22, but the high temp for the day on Aug. 24 was only 52 degrees.
    Federal funding for the Phillips County “Literacy for the ’90s Project” has been granted, announced Heginbotham librarian Rose Kreher. Confirmation of the Library Services and Construction Act, Title VI grant for $30,780 was received Aug. 12.

Aug. 24, 1967

    The Amherst Co-op Lumber and Hardware Co. is to be closed, store manager Earl Rudder said this week. The building has housed a lumber and hardware business since about 1910.
    The vocational carpentry class of Holyoke High School has almost completed its first summer project, a family dwelling.
    Highlighting the local weather news is the fact that no moisture has fallen in Holyoke during the past week. This is the first time since Feb. 14 that no precipitation has been recorded here during the seven-day period preceding publication.

Aug. 27, 1942

    Arrangements were completed on Wednesday night by J.G. Scholl, general manager of the Phillips County Fair, and members of the fair sports committee to bring Sam Brammer’s and Tom Pomeroy’s rodeo outfit to the fair for a two-day show. This is by far the best rodeo ever to appear in Holyoke. The contract provides for Brammer and Pomeroy to bring 12 saddle bucking horses, 12 Brahma steers, 10 bulldogging steers, 10 cows and 10 roping calves.
    Twelve rural schools in Phillips County are not equipped with a teacher to begin the fall term of school, and tire rationing regulations make it difficult to organize bus transportation to carry children to and from school. Due to the shortage of teachers in Colorado, special war emergency teaching certificates expiring Aug. 31, 1943, may be issued.
    The office of price administration in Washington, D.C., has issued a temporary freeze on certain four-door, hardtop new passenger automobiles, effective Aug. 18-Oct. 31. This amendment is being adopted at the request of armed forces in order to make these vehicles available for purchase by them.
    A Lions Club for Holyoke was organized at a meeting of business and professional men at the town hall..
