    With a pair of recent dog attacks and limited legal options to deal with negligent dog owners, the importance of an animal shelter once again returned to the spotlight at the Dec. 3 Holyoke City Council meeting.
    With a dedicated passion for antiques dating back to her childhood, Lucy Kropp took her love for antiquing and opened Antique Styles in Holyoke about three months ago.
    Colorado will have to negotiate further with Kansas, or go to the next level in the court system, before it can realize the benefits of a decision to build an augmentation pipeline and drain Bonny Reservoir, in relation to the Republican River Compact.

    La Mexicanita, co-owned by Juan Arriaga and his daughter Diana Arriaga, recently opened in a new location at 136 N. Interocean Ave. The store was previously located at 416 E. Denver St., where Woody’s Pivot Service is moving in. La Mexicanita’s new site previously housed Silver Screen Video.
    As the highest score-winners of the preliminary rounds, HHS cheerleaders moved on to the finals with Front Range Christian and won the second-place trophy of the 2A State Cheer Division. They were just two points shy of Front Range Christian’s winning score.

    Bryan Elder, the son of Jim and Dorinda Elder of Holyoke, has been nominated by Congressman Wayne Allard to the U.S. Air Force Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy.
    A vacancy has been declared in Re-1J School Board Director District A, upon the recent death of Ken Roll, who had filled that seat on the board since May of 1987.
    Maps and atlases will be delivered to the Valmeyer, Illinois, school by Christmastime — thanks to the efforts of Holyoke students in class 6A and the support of Nystrom, a map company based out of Chicago. A couple months ago, the local sixth-grade class launched an Adopt-a-School campaign to raise funds to buy maps for classrooms in Valmeyer after floodwaters ravaged the small community in early August.

Dec. 12, 1968

    More than 250 persons attended the Phillips County Historical Museum’s brand-burning kickoff Sunday in Holyoke. Ninety brands were burned into the rough boards which will hang in the museum.
    Sales of guns and ammunition will be controlled under the new federal gun law, which takes effect Dec. 16. Arthur A. Kennedy, district director of internal revenue for Colorado, said IRS is preparing material to help gun dealers, buyers and collectors comply with the new Gun Control Act of 1968, which was enacted by Congress in October.
    Starting next Monday evening, several of the Holyoke merchants have indicated that they will remain open in the evenings until 8:30 p.m. for the convenience of Christmas shoppers. These hours will remain in effect until Christmas Eve and then stores will close at 5:30 p.m.

Dec. 16, 1943

    The Holyoke firemen have announced a free picture show at the Peerless Theatre for children on Dec. 24. This is intended to take the place of the annual Christmas treats of candy which the firemen have been giving the children of this territory. As candy cannot be obtained in sufficient quantity to make such a treat possible this year, the picture show was arranged.
    On Dec. 1, the new machinery rationing program became effective and all applications for rationed machinery must be renewed.
    B.L. Faist, station agent here for the CB&Q Railroad, has served 25 years as a railroad telegrapher and received last week a gold medal from the Order of Railroad Telegraphers in honor of this period of service as a member of the order. He began his railroad career in 1907 and has been in the service of this division of the Burlington 25 years and has served in Holyoke the past 10 years.
