A new pump station is being built along Highway 385 just across the Phillips County line south of Holyoke. This pump station will be one of 15 new ones along the Pony Express Pipeline, which runs from Guernsey, Wyoming, to Cushing, Oklahoma.

Twila Schmidt will celebrate her 100th birthday next Tuesday, Oct. 28.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, in collaboration with the Colorado Hospital Association, the Colorado Medical Society, the Colorado Nurses Association and the Colorado Association of Local Public Health Officials, continues to refine statewide plans for responding to a possible case of Ebola and to assist hospitals, health care providers and first responders in their preparations.

With flu in headlines throughout the United States, it isn’t any different here in Holyoke. With flu season upon us and other illnesses circulating throughout the community, students in the Re-1J school district have been affected as well. The district reported Oct. 13 that there were about 126 students absent due to illness, or 22 percent of the district, though not all the absences were due to the flu.

A Saturday morning fire destroyed the Harchelroad Motors building in Imperial, Nebraska. The building and everything in it was a complete loss. Despite that, Harchelroad Motors opened for business Monday morning.

Oct. 27, 1994

After 31 years of service at Holyoke’s World Savings, Glendoris Ross is retiring from her position as branch manager as of Oct. 31.

Two significant improvements for the Holyoke Police Department were approved by unanimous votes at the regular meeting of the city council on Oct. 18. One improvement involves updating the department by installing a computer system, and the other involves the purchase of two new radar guns.

Holyoke junior Jessie Koch and freshman B.J. Carlstrom have qualified for the state gymnastics meet on Oct. 29 at Loveland High School. The girls participate with the Sterling team and have qualified in all-around including vault, beam, bars and floor exercise.

Oct. 23, 1969

One man was arrested Sunday by local city and county officials in connection with the theft of approximately $50 from the cash drawer at the Burge Hotel. The cash drawer was broken into at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Americans in good health can now be blood donors until their 66th birthday instead of the 60th or 61st as in the past.

Plans have been announced for the 1969 Colorado high school model bridge building competition, sponsored by the Professional Engineers of Colorado in cooperation with the Colorado State Department of Highways and George Washington High School of Denver. Students will actually design and build balsa wood model bridges, with the best in each school load-tested by the highway materials testing laboratory in Denver.

Oct. 26, 1944

Holyoke’s residences are increasing rapidly in spite of labor and material shortages. In recent weeks, four houses were moved into town from the country, and two more are coming.

Nearly 60 businessmen of Holyoke made contributions to a fund for giving to this community a free picture show in the Peerless Theatre on Oct. 31, Halloween night. The movement was sponsored by the Holyoke Lions Club to encourage the boys and girls to spend the evening in harmless pleasure rather than pranks of destruction.
