In 1911, Edward Hethcote and George King built the first brick garage in Holyoke, known as The Holyoke Auto Company, pictured at far left. The Buick dealership was located at 215 N. Interocean Ave., where it still stands as Olde Holyoke Square.      Tom Bennett was one of four people to be inducted into the Colorado Baseball and Softball League Hall of Fame on Sept. 29.
     The Young Americans conducted a three-day workshop in Holyoke, followed by a concert on the HHS stage Oct. 2 with 150 area students. The Young Americans pass on their love of music and the arts as they pursue their dream of studying music and touring America, all while teaching students about singing, dancing, self-esteem and confidence.

     Holyoke Re-1J School Board members are reluctant to give the nod for the HHS track project committee to go forward in pursuing grant moneys for an all-weather track. Their concern was expressed at the Oct. 2 board meeting, based on immediate needs in the district’s heating, venting and air conditioning system.
     Makaila Stapleton, a seventh-grader at HJHS, has been nominated for a student ambassadorship by People to People International for 2008. She was selected to share with 40 other students from Colorado, representing Holyoke and the United States while traveling and studying in Spain, France and Italy.
     Neighbors being terrorized by an aggressive rottweiler took their complaints to Holyoke City Council on Oct. 2.

Oct. 15, 1992

     A low of 29 degrees was reported in Holyoke Oct. 7, according to local weather observer Dale Anderson. The high temp on that same day was a mere 40 degrees.
     Eastern Colorado’s two candidates for the 4th Congressional District House seat, Wayne Allard and Tom Redder, squared off in a “lively debate” in Sterling Oct. 10.

Oct. 12, 1967

     To assure an unmistakable, word-by-word record of proceedings, a recorder has been installed in the office of Phillips County Judge A.C. Adams.
     The Venango High School band received its 39th consecutive superior rating at Band Day in Boulder. The Venango band holds the national record in its class for the number of consecutive superior ratings.
     In response to local interest, the advantages and problems of forming an Extension area which would include Phillips, Kit Carson, Washington and Yuma counties were discussed by the boards of county commissioners at a special meeting Friday in Wray.
     Ideal weather, except for a day or two of blustery wind, has prevailed over northeast Colorado during the past week. Though wheat would benefit from rain, the dry weather is being put to good use by those harvesting fall crops.
    
Seventy-Five Years Ago
Oct. 15, 1942

     An eight-week course in civilian pilot training at the junior college in Sterling is now being organized. The purpose of the training is to produce flight instructors, service pilots and other specialized personnel to maintain the military training and transportation lines through the country as well as top flight combat pilots.
     Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Norman on Monday closed their restaurant which they had operated here nearly 10 years and left Wednesday for Ogden, Utah, where Mr. Norman was to report today for railroad service with the Southern Pacific Railway. Their cafe fixtures will be stored in the building while they are gone.
     The Holyoke Spur Club, one of the town’s newest organizations, held its second initiation of members Sunday morning in the Holyoke Sales Pavilion where, after the trials of initiation, five people became members. The club proves to become more popular with threatened gas rationing.
