New one-way streets were established in downtown Holyoke on Dec. 9. Emerson Street between Interocean and Campbell avenues is now a one-way street going east. Emerson Street between Interocean and Baxter avenues is now a one-way street going west.

Occupied by the Hargreaves family for a little over 100 years, the 320-acre farm south of Holyoke was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on Dec. 3, 2013.

Ileana Rico and Braden Gift are the new co-managers at the Peerless Theatre.

HHS senior Anastasia Conklin was recently named the first-place winner in the District 4 Voice of Democracy competition.

Nygaard Chiropractic relocated to the former RadioShack headquarters at 102 S. Campbell Ave. this week from its previous location at 143 S. Campbell Ave.

Participation dropped considerably, but Holyoke’s rescheduled Country Christmas went down in history Saturday, Dec. 12. Unfortunately, the Parade of Lights, one of the most popular events of the past decade’s Country Christmas celebrations, was canceled this year.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago
Dec. 22, 1994

A burglary which occurred at Holyoke High School on Oct. 28 has been solved, according to Police Chief Barry Winckler. The second-degree burglary in October involved the theft of an iguana and three VCRs, worth approximately 1,000. There was also damage to some of the school doors.

Bret Kramer attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., Nov. 29-Dec. 4.

Dec. 18, 1969

A new identification card for elderly, disabled or blind Colorado citizens will soon be available in a joint effort between the State departments of social services and revenue. It has long been recognized by State officers that those persons not holding a valid Colorado driver’s license have had difficulty identifying themselves for check cashing or other purposes. The Colorado identification card was designed to alleviate this problem.

Financial resources of the Heginbotham Trust are going to be used and have been pledged to locate and bring to Holyoke a competent medical doctor, to build a medical clinic in this community, and to assist the Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society in staying in this community by allocating sufficient sums so that losses suffered in the operation of the hospital commencing with the month of December and to and including May 1970 will be reimbursed up to the extent of $6,000 per month.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago
Dec. 21, 1944

The National Honor Society charter was granted to Phillips County High School recently through the efforts of the superintendent and student council members and their sponsor, Mr. Price.

In the regular bimonthly meeting of the Holyoke Lions Club, held Friday evening in the dining room of the Methodist Church, the discussion centered around new industries for Holyoke. A broom factory, hybrid seed corn industry and small manufacturing plants were suggested by those present.

The sugar beet acreage for Colorado for the coming year will be 185,000 acres, if the recommendations of those who are supposed to know what it should be is carried out. Last year it was 139,000 acres.
