After six years as president of the Colorado Volleyball Officials Association, Holyoke’s Nici Akey officially turns over the reins on Jan. 15.

Colorado has once again raised its minimum wage, which is now in effect, from $8 up to $8.23 per hour. Tipped employees will also see their wages raised from $4.98 to that sector’s new minimum wage of $5.21 per hour.

Jeff and Tricia Michael of Holyoke are in the final stages of preparation for a two-week missions trip to Africa. They will be traveling with eight other men and women from Evangelical Free Church in Grant, Nebraska.

Holyoke Deputy City Clerk/Treasurer Tillie Fisbeck was recently notified that she earned the prestigious Master Municipal Clerk designation from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

Olga Sullivan joined D. Scott Realty as an associate broker on Jan. 5.

By next fall or winter, peaceful and majestic elk will be roaming the hills southeast of Holyoke as Martin Angus Ranch incorporates elk into its business.

Holyoke has a new claim to fame. It is now the home of three highly acclaimed borzoi dogs in the world of a racing event known as lure coursing.

Rick Hinck recently announced the addition of tree trimming and removal to the list of services offered by RS&K Enterprises, which previously focused on fix-it and handyman work and house painting.

First Security Bank in Holyoke will officially open as a full-service bank on Jan. 16. The bank at 106 S. Interocean Ave. was formerly World Savings and Loan Association.

Jan. 8, 1970

Temperatures have remained well below normal for the past seven days in Holyoke and Phillips County, with only traces of moisture. Daytime readings have been slightly higher than the freezing mark, with 2 below zero recorded twice for the low.

Dwight and Dwayne Good, America’s foremost gospel duo, will be appearing at the Revival Fires TV rally to be held at the Christian Church in Holyoke on Jan. 14. The Good twins are favorites on the Revival Fires TV program now viewed coast to coast every week by more than 70 million people.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago
Jan. 11, 1945

The Army has taken over many of Montgomery Ward’s stores again because the management did not comply with government orders, which the management claim to be illegal. Ward’s stores are not, strictly speaking, engaged in war work, but the government insists they obey war production orders “or else.”

Some say there is a shortage of hard liquor. Maybe that is why the Sixth War Loan drive went over so big. During the current January liquor holiday, the distillers are being given the “go” signal to make some 50 million gallons of the hard stuff. Manpower and cereal foods — war essential items — are going into beverage alcohol to make up this allotment.
