Colorado has a statewide average fuel price that has dropped below $2 per gallon, reaching $1.91 for unleaded as of Jan. 19, according to reports from the American Automobile Association. This state average price is $1.29 lower than the same day last year. The state average for premium unleaded sits at $2.20, and diesel is at $2.90.

Paoli Town Clerk/Treasurer Marilyn Miller relinquished her role to retirement after 38 1/2 years. Taking on the reins Jan. 1 was Joy Schafer.

Jake O’Neal, a 2007 HHS graduate, is releasing his first solo album under his new pseudonym “Drop Lines” on Jan. 24, his 26th birthday.

Melissa Memorial Hospital Foundation and board of directors held an informational town hall meeting Jan. 15 to present facility plans for planned expansions and remodeling and to inform the Holyoke community about the scope, extent and rationale behind the upcoming construction project.

Paul Sung, who grew up in Korea, began serving as pastor at First United Methodist Church in Holyoke in July after moving from Colorado Springs, where he had spent the last six years.

Randy Schafer is celebrating a second chance at life after receiving a double lung transplant in November.

Madelaine (McCallum) Lamm purchased the building at 245 N. Interocean Ave. in December, and 30 days later she held a grand opening for her salon and scrapbooking store. Maddie’s Shear Magic Salon & Scrapbooking officially opened Jan. 15.

Jan. 26, 1995

Holyoke Co-op representatives addressed city council members at the Jan. 17 meeting, proposing their plan to bring in railcars of phosphate and anhydrous ammonia to make liquid phosphate. A Kansas company that has portable equipment for the process will come to town to do the work north of Akron Street, just east of Interocean Avenue, along the railroad tracks. Because this area is zoned for industrial use, no special permits are required.

Tom Gertner is now managing the new Kugler Fertilizer branch office in Holyoke, located at 245 N. Interocean Ave., which formerly housed Kidz Alley.

Following the Jan. 17 meeting of the East Phillips County Hospital District board, hospital administrator Ace Thacker announced that Pat Notter has agreed to serve as co-director or assistant director of Colorado Plains Home Care.

Jan. 22, 1970

Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society notified members of the East Phillips County Hospital District board by letter this week that they wish to cease their operation of Melissa Memorial Hospital.

In a move to combat litter and minimize solid waste, Adolph Coors Company in Golden announced on Thursday a no-limit plan to pay a dime a pound for scrap aluminum delivered to its distributors in 11 Western states. The cash-for-cans program will begin in Colorado immediately.

Willard Clayton has submitted his resignation to the Re-1J school district board, effective immediately, stating that increased demands on his personal affairs were the cause for his reluctant decision. He has served on the school board for the past 11 years, serving approximately the last four as president.

Jan. 25, 1945

Pfc. Benjamin Nazarenus, Infantry, of Holyoke, was recently awarded the Purple Heart at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver.

President Roosevelt broke another precedent Saturday by taking the oath of office of the presidency for a fourth term.

A bill favored by the president to conscript labor, forcing men from 18-45 into essential industries or into the armed forces, is about to be presented to Congress. Drastic though this may seem, we must realize that war demands must come first if we are to win the earliest possible victory.
