John McCleary has been selected as the next superintendent of Holyoke School District Re-1J, beginning July 1. A two-year contract was approved at the March 3 school board meeting.

After RadioShack Corporate filed bankruptcy recently, PC Telcom announced to its employees last Friday, Feb. 27, the plan to close the company’s local RadioShack franchise around May 1.

Trisha Herman, owner of the newly formed Holyoke Fitness Club LLC, is excited to announce plans are underway for a new exercise center at 123 S. Interocean Ave. in Holyoke.

Another new face has joined the ranks of Holyoke Police Department. Joe Marcum began work as Holyoke’s newest police officer last week.

Phillips County was recognized by the Northeast Colorado Enterprise Sub Zone with the project receiving the most contributions in 2009, reported Phillips County commissioners at their Feb. 26 meeting. Phillips County’s new event center received contributions of $66,263.43 that were channeled through the Enterprise Zone.

Dan Kennedy, a 1989 HHS graduate, was recently inducted into the Metro State College 2010 Athletic Hall of Fame, along with other members of his 1989-90 basketball team.

Shari Cagle recently announced her intent to run for Phillips County treasurer.

As part of a Holyoke schoolwide enrichment program, the first Mini Academies were held for students in grades K-8 on March 3.

News that a family physician is planning to visit Holyoke April 1-2 in consideration of the practice opportunity here highlighted the recent meeting of the East Phillips County Medical Recruitment Committee. Dialogue also continues with three other physicians, two of whom plan to relocate together this summer, with the third relocating in mid-1996.

Minnie McCormick, with the help of neighbors and relatives who brought in a noon luncheon, celebrated her 95th birthday Feb. 25 at her home.

Phillips County became Colorado’s leading winter wheat producer in 1969 with 4,092,650 bushels, according to the Colorado Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. In 1969, 158,000 acres of winter wheat were planted, and of this, 145,000 acres were harvested, with an average bushel per acre of 28.2.

The Colorado Young Farmers Education Association was formed on Feb. 28 in Sterling. The Holyoke Young Farmers is one of the 10 charter clubs of the state organization.

March 8, 1945

A movement has been started and is being encouraged by the Holyoke Lions Club to turn over all sales tax tokens to stores which are collecting them for the Red Cross. This contribution of now-worthless tokens was recognized by many people to be an easy way to get funds during the current Red Cross drive. The Red Cross will redeem the tokens for cash.

Male workers classified as 2A and 2B, as well as those in other groups, were reminded today that they should consult their local United States Employment Service office before changing jobs. “Under regulations now in effect,” Jerry Hamilton, area director of the War Manpower Commission, said, “before a man can change positions, he must have clearance from the Employment Service and from his local draft board.”

Men under 30 years of age engaged in transportation or vehicle repair activities are faced with immediate reclassification by Selective Service boards. Men who were classified as 2A or 2B as of Jan. 1 will be reclassified by their local boards unless their employers immediately file new requests for deferment.
