Postmarked Feb. 9, 1914, with 1-cent postage, this postcard was addressed to Miss Hattie Pike in Peetz. Hattie Pike was the postmaster in Peetz in the 1920s. The inscription reads, “Dear Hattie, we arrived here all OK. Uncle George meets us at the train. Suppose you got home all right. Will write when we get at home. To help with the construction of a partial parallel taxiway, the Holyoke Airport has received a $665,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program. The 3,300-foot taxiway will be built east of the airport’s 5,000-foot runway. The taxiway is needed to allow plans to turn off after landing and avoid having to back-taxi down the runway.

Dragon Hoopsters hosted a fundraising event featuring hypnotist Frederick Winters on April 12 in the HHS auditorium.

Holyoke School District’s first annual Emerald Awards program will be held April 16 in the HHS auditorium. Staff members to be honored include Nancy Pillard, Heart Award; Nancy Kennedy, Innovator of the Year; and Lynn Schneider, Leader Among Us.

Partners in Education is sponsoring a Carnival for Technology on April 22 at Holyoke Elementary School. Fun activities for the whole family include games, prizes, food, cotton candy, face painting and cake walk, with all proceeds going toward technology in the school.

Hundreds of people gathered at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst throughout the day Sunday, April 11, to celebrate the church’s 100th anniversary.

April 20, 1995

Yet another April snowstorm blanketed the Holyoke area earlier this week as 6 inches of snow was recorded April 17.

A number of changes from previous years are included in plans for the 1995 HHS junior/senior prom. The grand march will be held in the HHS auditorium this year, and admission to the prom will be by ticket only. Each junior and senior will be issued four tickets for the April 22 prom. A limited number of additional tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

April 16, 1970

April 22 has been proclaimed as Environmental Education Day by the State Board of Education.

The 1969 retail sales in the tri-county area of Phillips, Sedgwick and Yuma were up 30.8% over retail sales in 1968.

A new, different, worthwhile program for clubs and organizations has been announced by Mrs. Wayne Scott, Haxtun. Blue Chiquita banana labels are worth 5 cents when they are returned to the proper representative of the company. The money derived from the labels will benefit many underprivileged children in orphanages throughout the country.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago
April 19, 1945

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in Warm Springs, Georgia, where he had been resting for 10 days. Death resulted from a cerebral hemorrhage at 4:35 p.m. on April 12. Mr. Roosevelt was 63. He had been president for 12 years, one month and nine days.

Holyoke stores were closed from noon-2 p.m. Saturday in recognition of the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and to permit everyone engaged in business to attend the memorial service held in the American Legion Hall at 1 p.m.

An urgent request is being made by the Legion Auxiliary for books and playing cards for servicemen. These articles, so important to the pleasure of the men serving our country, will help to make up libraries aboard ships.
