
The Holyoke Farmer’s Co-op filling station was built the summer of 1927 on the Holyoke Farmers Cooperative Elevator Company property on the north side of West Denver Street. The new, “strictly modern” station was of brick construction with a large canopy roof projecting 27 feet beyond the main building to protect the two large pumps which served the double driveway, in addition to a curb pump. — source: Phillips County Museum

After conducting three years of research on one-to-one technology for Holyoke School District, the technology committee’s recommendation for a January 2016 implementation of 1:1 Chromebooks in grades 5-12 was approved at the April 21 Re-1J board meeting.
Viaero Wireless has partnered with Denver’s 7NEWS to provide access to cell tower-mounted cameras that provide live views of Colorado’s eastern plains. One of these cameras is positioned on top of the Viaero tower west of Holyoke near Jules Street and County Road 37.
A decision to accept the First Pioneer plat in the Robin Lake Development subdivision south of Cobblestone Inn was made at the Holyoke City Council meeting April 21. This plat will help facilitate the development of four commercial lots by First Pioneer National Bank in a one-block area between Scheunemann and Hargreaves streets.

Recalling 60 years of camaraderie in serving the community, 11 Paragon Club members celebrated the club’s 60th anniversary April 20. The group was organized in January 1950 with 22 members.
Ballyneal Golf Club was recently named a 2010 Groundwater Guardian Green Site by The Groundwater Foundation in recognition of the site’s groundwater and environmental stewardship. Ballyneal earned this exclusive designation based on its current practices related to water use, pesticides and fertilizer management, and pollution prevention.
Twenty-Five Years Ago — May 4, 1995
Kim Killin, a 1987 HHS graduate, has returned to Holyoke to practice law with the David O. Colver law firm.
Brien Hill will be providing counseling services to the residents of Phillips County beginning in June. This announcement was made by the Board of Commissioners at its month-end meeting April 28. Hill will make up the Phillips County Department of Family Services, and the Department of Human Services will contract with him to provide family preservation services.
Holyoke Police Department is asking for assistance in locating an individual who fired a gun near the practice baseball/softball field April 27. Reports say the bullet landed in center field. Although there were children playing on the practice field at the time, no one was injured.
El Paso Floors Inc. will be replacing the Holyoke High School gymnasium floor this summer, with work to begin when school closes and completion scheduled for about July 15.
Fifty Years Ago — April 30, 1970
The medical staff of Melissa Memorial Hospital, consisting of Dr. Roark and Dr. Timmerman, Sterling, at their regular staff meeting April 29 voted to recommend to the East Phillips County Hospital Board the appointment of Dr. Myrlen Chesnut to the active medical staff of the hospital.
Juan Huss Frausto, music director at Venango High School for the past 17 years, has resigned, effective at the end of this school term.
Seventy-Five Years Ago — May 3, 1945
At a recent meeting of the Holyoke Golf Club, considerable time was given to the matter of a permanent course. The present golf course being subject to sale and the club not having any long-time lease on the land, a committee was appointed to consider locations and to contact individuals who own or represent owners to learn of what arrangements might be made to secure satisfactory lease or option to purchase land suitable for a course. Also at the meeting, the dues for the current season was set by motion at $5.
Early the morning of Tuesday, May 8, with the rumbling of heavy trucks, the neighing of horses and ponies, the screeching of monkeys, the trumpeting of Susie Q, the elephant, everyone will know that Bud E. Anderson’s All-American Circus has arrived at the Holyoke circus lot at the corner of Interocean and Hale. Local sponsor of Anderson’s circus is the Holyoke post of American Legion.
