Holyoke City Park was the site of a Glover family reunion in the late 1940s. The Glovers arrived by covered wagon in 1886 and settled just east of where Holyoke now stands. In 1892, they moved 12 and a half miles southeast of Holyoke. George T. Glover was one of the earliest settlers in Phillips County. A 1904 issue of The State Herald congratulates him on his marriage to Flora Norris and notes that George was “one of Phillips County’s most prosperous ranchmen.” — Source: Pat (Starbuck) Altstadt

Plans to draft a resolution accepting the Phillips County Hazard Mitigation Plan were made at the Oct. 6 Holyoke City Council meeting. The Phillips County plan is only a portion of an extensive plan for nine counties in the region, put together with the help of a hired Federal Emergency Management Agency consultant. Adoption of a plan is necessary to be eligible for FEMA grant programs in case the county were to declare a state of disaster.

One of the greatest growths in income tax receipts ever to be recorded has occurred in the last five years. In 1940 the total receipts from income tax laws in all states were $365,000,000. Last year the receipts were a little over $782,000,000. This shows that the collection jumped 114.3% in that time. Sales tax increased during the war years from $515,000,000 to $745,000,000.

With both Republicans and Democrats wanting to ease the tax burden of the people and incidentally wanting the people to know each group did it, now it appears that a 10% reduction in income taxes is possible.
