Progress on saving the north Scheunemann wall by the mini park can finally begin after a bid by Concrete Stabilization Technologies Inc. was accepted at the Nov. 3 Holyoke City Council meeting. The company will stabilize the foundation under the veneer brick wall parallel to the Scheunemann wall by injecting a special foam into the ground under the foundation, which will expand and harden, preventing any further ground settlement.

PC Telcom’s request to put in a commercial Wi-Fi connection in the HHS new gym was granted at last week’s Re-1J school board meeting. This connection will be more secure and will lighten the load on the school’s public connection when the gym is full of people. There is no cost to the district, and use is free to those with PC Telcom accounts.

Nov. 11, 2010

A benefit dinner and auction for 5-year-old Blye McCallum is set for Nov. 12. Blye, who has cerebral palsy, will be traveling with his parents to Duesseldorf, Germany, in February 2011 to undergo specialized therapy.

Numerous people visited Phillips County Museum on Friday night, Nov. 5, for an interactive tour with demonstrations and information on museum artifacts.

Nov. 16, 1995

Linda “Lin” Mussman began her duties as the first-ever Holyoke Chamber of Commerce administrator on Nov. 2. Chamber president Bob Heldenbrand explained that the role of administrator carries with it more duties than the previous position of chamber secretary.

Anyone driving down South Interocean Avenue needs to watch out for new speed limit signs near the elementary/junior high school. The new signs, which were installed last week by the Colorado Department of Transportation, lower the speed limit to 20 mph when the lights are flashing.

With a focus on energy and operational savings for Holyoke School District Re-1J, James Jacobson of Johnson Controls made a presentation for energy conservation at the Nov. 9 meeting of the local Board of Education.

Nov. 12, 1970

Effective next month, the sale of carbon tetrachloride in household products will be banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the doctors of America will breathe a sigh of relief.

The exciting, never-before-told story of how Denver got the 1976 Winter Olympics is featured in the new 112-page November-December issue of Colorado magazine.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Nov. 15, 1945

An epidemic of insulatoritis seems to be going the rounds of rabbit hunters and others using .22 caliber rifles. During recent weeks, thousands of telephone insulators have been destroyed by being shot off the poles. In some instances, the nation’s most important lines have been put out of commission for considerable periods of time from this cause.

The FFA chapter of Holyoke High School has made plans for the annual FFA turkey, goose and duck drawing. The drawings will be made Nov. 20 at the Holyoke Sales Pavilion. Tickets will be sold either at 15¢ each or two for 25¢. There will be three turkeys, two geese and one duck given away at the drawing.

To avoid destruction by atomic bombs, people will probably in the future live in the country or in small settlements. The day of the large city seems doomed, unless a wave of brotherly love suddenly sweeps over the earth.
