In a joint effort to bring better-quality programming and real-life video production operations to HHS, the Heginbotham Trust and PC Telcom have changed the way video/audio is produced and distributed — a project cost of approximately $20,000 that was shared equally between the two entities. The investment placed new equipment at the school and at the cable TV Channel 13 head end.

The Colorado Hawking Club returned to Holyoke on Jan. 15 after a five-year hiatus, sharing an educational video on the birds and the sport of hawking and mingling with visitors at the Peerless before enjoying a weekend of hunting.

Three doctors have been added to the specialty clinic monthly lineup at Melissa Memorial Hospital. Holyoke native Justin Newman, M.D., is an orthopedic surgeon, and father-son duo Richard Asarch, M.D., and Adam Asarch, M.D., will provide dermatology services.

Lloyd “Mike” Michael Jr. of Michael Auction was inducted into the Colorado Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame on Jan. 8 at the 53rd annual Colorado Auctioneers Association convention in Denver.

Over 300 people from Holyoke and surrounding communities packed the auditorium at Holyoke High School on Jan. 12 for the 180 Tour, featuring the band VOTA, musician Amy Schmidt and speaker Mike Smith.

Jan. 25, 1996

At its Jan. 16 meeting, Holyoke City Council approved a resolution which started the annexation process for the proposed Pheasant Run addition.

An ordinance which has been disputed a number of meetings passed on final reading by a 4-1 vote at the Jan. 16 Holyoke City Council meeting. The purpose of the ordinance is to allow the Holyoke Housing Authority to continue to operate under R-E or R-1 zoning, eliminating the need for a zoning change which would create a big commercial area in the middle of a residential area.

Mario and Ana Bencomo of Holyoke welcomed their first child, Noe Bencomo, into the world on Jan. 21 as the first baby born at Melissa Memorial Hospital in 1996.

Longtime Holyoke resident Grace E. Machamer celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 14.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Jan. 21, 1971

Holyoke Fire Department bowlers handed the Wray Fire Department a solid defeat by picking up 5,261 total pins against Wray’s 4,637 in a recent tournament held at the Holyoke bowling lanes. The Holyoke bowlers were recipients of a dinner at the expense of the Wray team.

The 1971 pheasant chick and wildlife habitat improvement program is still open for the coming year. Participants in the program will receive 20 chicks and a supply of chick feed. The 4-H’er must develop suitable habitat for the pheasants. This habitat must consist of planting trees, planting cover grasses or developing watering devices.

Jan. 24, 1946

The Phillips County Council of the Inter-church Temperance Movement of Colorado held its annual election last Thursday evening at the First Methodist Church in Holyoke. The purpose of this organization shall be to unite Christian forces of Phillips County in a cooperative temperance movement. It shall promote sobriety and good citizenship and carry on a program designed to end the manufacture, sale and use of alcoholic beverages in the state of Colorado.

Upon returning home from a business trip into Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Coler reported the experience of having been robbed and possibly gassed while spending the night of Jan. 11 in the Keystone Hotel in McCook, Nebraska, when on their return trip here.

Five local airplanes left Holyoke last Wednesday for the area south of Haxtun to hunt for a lion which has been in that community for about a year. He has chased several children on horses and has killed a good deal of livestock. It is estimated that 75 cars were there and about 125 men. The party searched all day, but no sign of the mountain lion was found by the pilots and others.

Colorado’s highway budget for 1946, totaling $18,783,073.78, was approved by Gov. Vivian Jan. 12 and includes a sum of $400,000 for improvement of State Highway 51 from Julesburg to Wray. This is the largest budget since 1937.
