Wilson lived with her brother George for a time and passed away at his home. King was born in England in 1859 and came to Peoria, Illinois, with his family. He and his wife established their home in Holyoke in 1900. He was a saddle and harness maker and formed a partnership with Sam Thompson. For the first time in nearly 97 years, the price of a postage stamp dropped. As of April 10, a first-class stamp now costs 47 cents, down from its 49-cent price. In a historic turn of events, the United States Postal Service reduced mail rates an average of 4.3%.

PC Telcom CEO and general manager Vince Kropp announced at the annual meeting April 7 that broadband customers will likely surpass telephone customers this year.

Sixty years ago, 13 women organized an Extension Club known today as the Eureka Club. Members gathered April 5 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the club. Four of the original 13 members are still living today.

Holyoke Elementary School halls and classrooms were packed Friday night, April 8, for the Partners in Education Carnival for Technology. Twenty-two booths featured games of all kinds, and it’s estimated the event raised about $3,000.

Robert Killorin is the new occupational therapist for Prairie Vista Care Center and Melissa Memorial Hospital.

Great Outdoors Colorado Trust Fund notified the Phillips County Board of County Commissioners this week that a grant application for $8,500 to create a master plan for the county’s recreational needs will be awarded in full.

In its initial attempt at self-sponsoring the health fair with the local Lions Club, the Melissa Memorial Hospital staff who were involved in the planning of the event are satisfied with its results. Channel 9 television from Denver has sponsored this event in the past with the Holyoke Lions Club.

Heginbotham Library has chosen to celebrate National Library Week by announcing the debut of its new public-access computer, a Power Macintosh equipped with modem and CD-ROM drive.

 

Fifty Years Ago

April 15, 1971

Following a year-long study by area Scouters, a decision was made to unite Morwama and Philowick Scout districts into a single district. Philowick is comprised of Logan, Phillips and Sedgwick counties, and Morwama is made up of Morgan, Washington and Yuma counties. Geographically, the new district will be the second largest in the Longs Peak Council. Not yet determined is a name for the new district.

The Japanese have broken the 100 million bushel level in purchases of U.S. wheats, an all-time record for that market and the largest single cash sale for U.S. wheat exports in history, the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee said today.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

April 18, 1946

Repairing of electric signs in Holyoke the past week has improved the appearance of the business section. If we had more such signs, our town would be better lighted at night. Even a small neon sign at each place of business would be a great help, and the cost of operation would be small. A committee of the Lions Club is working to secure more illuminated signs for Holyoke.

A community roller skating rink seems as far from being realized now as at any time since the Legion Hall rink was closed about two months ago. Construction materials are so scarce that anything of a permanent nature cannot be attempted without difficulties that appear insurmountable.

As we still ride the toboggan toward the abyss of financial ruin, it is fortunate that we have a few people who have “horse sense” enough to point out our plight. Sen. Harry Byrd in a recent radio address said we shall end 1946 with a national debt of $279 billion.
