Farrington R. Carpenter, state revenue director, this week urged all persons in Colorado to check their out-of-state purchases during the past year to determine if they have paid a “use tax” on those purchases. The state law levying a 2 percent tax on all purchases made outside the state for use, storage or consumption is being enforced rigorously. The use tax is necessary for the protection of Colorado merchants as it tends to keep Colorado money in Colorado by thwarting the attempt to evade the sales tax through the purchasing in other states.
