
This group of people is pictured in front of the B&M Eating House. The building was purchased from the B&M Railway in November 1903 for $3,000 to be used as the second Phillips County Courthouse. After 14 years of having a Phillips County Relay For Life, participants will have to travel just a bit farther for 2016’s Relay. This year’s event is combining with Logan County.
In a Monday morning meeting May 16, community recreation committee members met with members of Holyoke City Council to go over various concerns voiced at the last council meeting regarding the proposed city recreation department.

Junior high science teacher Martin Roth is retiring after a 21-year teaching career at Holyoke Junior High School.
The new digital projector and equipment has been installed at the Peerless Theatre, which will allow the Peerless to show movies in 3D as well as digital cinema.
Twenty-Five Years Ago — May 23, 1996
Holyoke could become 39.4 acres larger if the city purchases a plot of land southeast of town. In a special session of the city council last Thursday, May 16, Denny O’Neal and council members discussed a possible annexation of land south of Johnson Street between Worley and Reynolds avenues.
A local appliance store is under the same name but new management after the death of its owner. George Leibbrandt successfully owned and operated George’s Repair out of his home in Holyoke until his death last February. Now his son Jim continues the business his father started 20 years ago.
Speed limits on interstate highways in Colorado will increase from 65 mph to 75 mph beginning May 28.
The HHS boys track team was named 2A state track champions last weekend, while the girls placed third.
Fifty Years Ago — May 20, 1971
Bill Bradley has opened Bradley’s Body Shop in the building formerly used by Western Vault Co., located one-half mile north of Holyoke.
Using lots of cloth, needle and thread, paint, and a lot of imagination, a committee of Pep Club girls with outside help stitched together a new Dragon mascot for Holyoke High.
“Monday school” is scheduled for summer at the United Methodist Church in place of the usual Bible school. Monday school will meet from 1-3 p.m. every Monday afternoon during the summer. Children ages 3 years through eighth grade are invited.
Seventy-Five Years Ago — May 23, 1946
Three nights beginning tonight the Holyoke post of American Legion is holding its circus at the hall. High school dramatic groups will present plays tonight and Saturday night. The Girl Scouts will be in charge of the stage show Friday night. Jack Sheldon and his orchestra will furnish music for dancing each night after the performances. The Legion Club rooms have been prepared for booth and side attractions.
Tuesday’s shows by Bell Bros. Circus attracted large crowds afternoon and evening. The big-top tent with its three rings and large side show tent were well patronized. As usual a number of children had their first glimpse of an elephant and of real monkeys.
The band concert this week and all following concerts will be given at 8 o’clock Friday evening on the park lawn. This change is to enable the businessmen to attend.
