Five Years Ago — Sept. 8, 2016

Micaila Frazier took on the role of general manager at the Peerless Theatre at the end of August. She is teaming up with booking supervisor Becca Brandt, who stepped into that job June 1 after several years of experience in Peerless concessions.

Yuma golfer Mike Foor won $10,000 when he hit a hole-in-one on hole No. 2 in the Sept. 3-4 Labor Day weekend two-person golf scramble at Holyoke Golf Course. Holyoke Golf Club pays the insurance premium for a $10,000 prize for anyone who shoots a hole-in-one on hole No. 2 on the front nine Saturday of the Labor Day weekend tourney.

 

Ten Years Ago — Sept. 8, 2011

Staff and volunteers from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science have completed excavation of a Stegomastodon that was discovered by workers at a gravel pit in Phillips County. The dig was conducted this summer on Darlene Weis’ land southeast of Holyoke.

With child obesity on the rise in the United States, over 100 Holyoke students, parents and volunteers took the first step to becoming more active at the kickoff to the Walking School Bus program. Friday, Sept. 2, the group gathered at Holyoke Ballpark, making the healthy choice to walk to school.

The Skold family farm located 18 miles northwest of Holyoke was recently honored as a Colorado Centennial Farm. The recognition occurred at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo Aug. 26.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago —Sept. 12, 1996

City of Holyoke officials are looking into ways to solve current water and wastewater problems. The Engineering Co. out of Fort Collins was recently asked to examine water and wastewater systems as well as rates for each and give their recommendations to the council.

Some intersections in Holyoke may be closed from one to two weeks due to the highway construction project.

Holyoke City Council is considering a request from HRC Recycling LLC for financial assistance.

 

Fifty Years Ago — Sept. 9, 1971

Paul Harper, Sterling, has been employed as manager for the Holyoke Super Inc. market, according to Dale Hofmeister, owner of the store. The date for opening the new market is yet indefinite.

Wages United Methodist Church celebrated its 55th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 5. The newly remodeled sanctuary was also rededicated by the district superintendent, Rev. E.B. Roubotham, Cheyenne, Wyoming, assisted by Rev. Charles Cooper.

Rev. Warren D. Swanson, superintendent of the Midwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church of America, will be in the Fairfield Covenant Church on Sunday morning, Sept. 12, to install Rev. Jerome M. Ahlstedt as pastor of the church.

The high freight rate and a falling off of cream due to the dry weather were the reasons given by Beatrice Foods Company for closing the Zeiler Creamery. The creamery operated by John Zeiler since 1951 will cease operation Sept. 10. Zeiler Creamery was first located in the old Clover Blossom Creamery building on Denver Street until 1956 when it was moved to its present location in the Evans building.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago — Sept. 12, 1946

The Butane-Propane Service has recently added bulk tanks to their property north of the Denver elevator, which brings the total storage capacity of the plant to 70,000 gallons of liquid gas. The addition of this storage makes it one of the largest plants in the state.

Plans are going ahead for the opening of the Holyoke schools on Monday, Sept. 16. Both the high school and the grade school teaching staffs are complete, and all the teachers but two are here.

The rate of postage on domestic air mail will be reduced from 8 cents an ounce to 5 cents an ounce or fraction of an ounce, beginning Oct. 1.
