A train is pictured entering Holyoke from the east in 1918. Construction of the railroad started near Holyoke on March 15, 1887, and was completed to Sterling on Sept. 27, 1887. John Chapdelaine started in a new role as director of the Eastern Colorado Community Fund on Dec. 1. ECCF is a nonprofit service provider existing under the umbrella of the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado. It provides resources and serves as adviser to potential donors/organizations and inspires and promotes local philanthropy.
Phillips County District Court Judge Charles M. Hobbs has granted a one-day evidentiary hearing on the quiet title decree pertaining to the legal description of the city’s “pit” property located behind Cobblestone Inn & Suites.

The After School Enrichment Program, sponsored by 4-H and STEM, gives students in third through fifth grade the opportunity to learn additional skills following normal school hours. The students are currently learning the ins and outs of robotics, and Extension agent Tracy Trumper said they will also focus on quilting, cupcake decorating and chalk art.
Northeast Colorado Board of Health members learned at their Nov. 16 meeting that the region will receive a 51% funding cut over the next four years for maternal and child health programs.

Holyoke native Marti Miller has been hired as a paraprofessional visitor for the Baby’s 1st Steps program. Baby’s 1st Steps, a parent-to-parent program, was designed to help expectant and new parents become confident and knowledgeable in their parenting role.
Holyoke Chief of Police Barry Winckler recently received his Ph.D. in criminal justice management.
Results of a recent study conducted by Martin and Wood Water Consultants Inc. indicate that if a replacement well for the city’s well No. 1 were dug at 935 S. Sherman Ave., the impact on surrounding water wells would be minimal.

In a letter from the Colorado Department of Health, officials of the town of Holyoke were notified to cease and desist open burning at its city dump ground located 2 1/2 miles northwest of Holyoke. The letter states that the town has been found to be in violation of the Colorado air pollution control commission’s regulations. Officials of the town announced that the dump grounds will be closed to the public until definite open times can be arranged and a caretaker procured to enforce the burning regulation.
Towns along Highway 385 are disturbed this week over a projected 1990 rural arterial system being proposed to the state Legislature. It proposes sending Highway 385 from Lamar to Limon to Brush.

A locker law designed to regulate the industry will be among the first bills to be submitted to the Legislature, H.L. Titus, chairman of the Colorado Frozen Foods Locker Association Legislative Committee, stated.
Sterling’s banner boxing event, the VFW-Advocate’s Golden Gloves Tune-Up Tournament, qualifying champions of the northeastern Colorado region for the News-Elks tournament in Denver, will be held Jan. 6-8 at the Sterling auditorium. The tournament is open to all amateurs in this region.
The appointment of F.B. Kelly, former publisher of The Enterprise, as representative for the New York Life Insurance Company in Phillips County was made this week by V.V. Van Leuven, agency director at the company’s offices in Denver.
The mild weather which had prevailed here for the most part of the winter turned colder last Saturday when the wind came up and the temperature dropped to 9 below zero during the night.
