The Giant Map of Colorado’s 77th stop on its 2016-2017 tour around the state was at Holyoke Elementary on Jan. 18, teaching students in grades 3-4 geography skills through games and activities. Students identified cities, used map grids, and talked about roads, elevations and geographic features as they moved around the classroom-sized teaching tool.
Ballyneal Golf Club was ranked No. 50 in the biennial 2017-2018 Golf Digest’s America’s Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses, released at the start of this year. The local golf course has been ranked in the top 100 since 2011.

City council members voted Jan. 17 to approve a purchase request from Holyoke Police Department to buy a 2012 Dodge Charger to be used as a police vehicle.
Virgil Harms’ 50-year reign as mayor of Paoli made national news last week when the five-decade mayor was interviewed and featured in a brief segment on CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley on Jan. 20.
Janna Smith and Nicholas Ortner, both of Holyoke, wrapped up their Catch-a-Calf experience at the National Western Stock Show in Denver Jan. 7-8 after both were lucky enough to catch a calf at last year’s Stock Show. Smith received reserve grand champion, while Ortner placed in the top five.

Jeremiah J. “Jerry” Cogan, M.D., currently a physician in Canon City, has accepted a position with Melissa Memorial Hospital at the hospital-run clinic and is set to begin May 1.
Several parents approached the Holyoke Re-1J School Board on Jan. 21, noting strong disapproval for the school year extending into June.
A crowd of nearly 100 enjoyed rubbing elbows with the famous and infamous at the Jan. 23 Exposition of Eminent People presented by participants of Holyoke’s ALM/Talent Pool curriculum.
Jonathan Kleve, a senior at Holyoke High School, has received an offer of appointment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

A special meeting will be held Jan. 31 in the Holyoke council chambers concerning municipal home rule. Jerry Kempf, Colorado Municipal League, will discuss the pros and cons of home rule for a community the size of Holyoke.
A committee selected to review the dress code in the Holyoke elementary and junior high will meet Jan. 31 in the junior high wing of the grade school.
The Marine Corps Reserve at the Federal Center is seeking applicants to become the first woman reserve Marine to be enlisted in Colorado history.

J.H. Lamborn of Blue Hill, Nebraska, former partner with H.E. Arterburn in Bill’s Lunch, purchased the Holyoke Cafe from M.T. Harris and took possession Jan. 24.
At the regular meeting of the Lions Club, it was voted to take over the sponsorship of the Boy Scouts in Holyoke, and plans were laid for the reorganization of the local troop, which has not been active during the past year.
Because of the splendid interest and enthusiasm manifested at Lamar’s first community sing held last Sunday evening, it was decided to make it a weekly event. This week the sing will be held at the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints. Everyone is cordially invited. Musical numbers will be especially appreciated.
Feasibility of a highway tunnel from Estes Park to Grand Lake is currently being explored by civic organizations of Estes Park. The proposed tunnel would cut under the Continental Divide to connect U.S. 34 at Estes Park with U.S. 40 at Granby.
