    Holyoke Elementary School literacy coordinator and longtime music teacher Nancy Kennedy is retiring after 28 years of teaching, 25 of which were spent in Holyoke.
    HHS senior Alex Quintana claimed a gold medal in the Class 2A 300-meter hurdle race at the state meet May 19.
    Special ceremonies will be held at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery May 27 to bless the new cemetery grounds addition and to rebless the original 127-year-old rural cemetery located southeast of Holyoke.
    Jake’s Feed is now open for business as they transition to their new location south of Melissa Memorial Hospital on East Johnson Street. The new, larger location allows for a retail area and a warehouse.

    With the best interest of East Phillips County Hospital District at heart, Arlene Harms has resigned her position as administrator at Melissa Memorial Hospital.
    Eight teams have the opportunity to soak up the sun in a fun-filled day of coed softball June 9. The slow-pitch tournament will serve as a fundraiser for the local FCCLA members attending the national leadership conference in Anaheim, California, July 6-13.
    Sixth-grader Molly Brandt was recently recognized as the first-place winner in the Society of Women Engineers’ 20th annual “Great Women in Engineering and Science” sixth-grade essay contest.

    Garold Roberts has been hired as the new Holyoke city superintendent after he resigned from the City electric superintendent position a month ago.
    Bill Schiermeyer recently relocated his television business to a new, spacious location at 115 S. Interocean Ave., and he is planning a Grand Opening May 29. Bill’s TV was previously housed at 136 W. Denver St.
    After representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration were in Holyoke last week to meet with a group of citizens to address some concerns which have been raised regarding the proximity of the new Holyoke Lions Fishin’ Hole in relation to the north end of the airport runway, a wire cable fence has been placed across the road at the northwest side of the pond.

    An overwhelming majority of voters approved formation of the Frenchman Ground Water Management District in the special election May 18.
    Freakish weather continues on the High Plains, with extremely hot weather closely following freezing temperatures and substantial moisture following one of the driest winters on record.

May 28, 1942

    Sheriff H.M. Clements was notified this week that the two men who burglarized a number of business places and schoolhouses in Paoli, Amherst, Grant, Nebraska, and Venango, Nebraska, March 23 were captured last week in Salem, Oregon.
    Ernest Coler will close his electric and gas appliance store Tuesday. Inability to get merchandise because of the discontinuance of the manufacturing of many items in his stock is the reason for the closing.
    Holyoke’s municipal electric and water plant operated at a profit of $13,331.05 during the fiscal year, May 1, 1941-April 30, 1942, according to the report of F.C. Hendee, auditor for the Town.
