On June 3, about 30 antique tractors will be leaving from Holyoke on Highway 23 to begin a 476-mile relay across Nebraska over a nine-day span, all for the sake of raising funds for Operation Comfort Warriors.

The resurgence of the local Rockies Skills Challenge in Holyoke had kids ages 6-13 traveling from Sterling, Haxtun and Chappell, Nebraska, to participate on May 27. City of Holyoke recreation director Victoria Timm hosted the event as a member of the Colorado Parks & Recreation Association.

 

Ten Years Ago

A website containing everything from commissioners minutes to rental forms was recently launched and unveiled by Phillips County. Just about everything anyone would need to know about the county is now available at www.colorado.gov/phillipscounty.

Nearly 30 kids grabbed their fishing poles and tackle boxes Friday afternoon, May 25, for a four-hour fishing camp held at Holyoke Lions Club Fishin’ Hole. Jack Wieland and another officer with the Division of Wildlife came together with Phillips County Extension office to make the afternoon and evening a success.

Holyoke social studies teacher Luke Thomas recently took five students to the prestigious National History Day in Colorado state contest in Denver, but it was the teacher himself who came away with an award. Thomas was awarded one of two Patricia A. Behring Teacher of the Year awards.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

June 5, 1997

Harry and Linda Marshall have started their own business, Southwinds Storage. Located about half a mile south of City Park, the structure contains 34 units of four different sizes.

After walking the equivalent of nearly three and a half times around the earth while delivering Holyoke’s mail, Dennis Hagemann is retiring, ending his 40-year postal career. He has worked for the Holyoke Post Office since May of 1957.

Phillips County commissioners are considering purchasing Holyoke City Hall as a new location for the CSU county cooperative Extension office. Talks are still in the very early stages.

Heavy rains hit the Holyoke area over the past week. The widespread precipitation was a drastic change from the extremely dry conditions that existed up to May 22. Rainfall of up to 3.5 inches was reported around the county.

 

Fifty Years Ago

June 1, 1972

Ted Clark won the 440-yard dash in the junior division of the Junior Olympics held in Cozad, Nebraska. He is a member of the Holyoke High School Class of 1972 and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dariel Clark.

Twisting high winds caused considerable damage on the William Enniga farm 3 miles north and 2 miles west of Holyoke last Thursday evening.

Max G. Smith has been appointed postmaster in Amherst, the postal service announced today. Smith, 59, received his appointment under the new merit selection basis established for the postal service in legislation recently passed by Congress and signed by President Nixon.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

June 5, 1947

Dick Lindberg, youngest son of Mrs. Marjorie Lindberg and an employee of The Holyoke Enterprise since last September, was severely injured when the newspaper press on which he was working was accidently put in motion, striking him on the side of the head and giving him a large scalp wound. The first and second fingers of his right hand were so badly crushed in the press that they had to be amputated at the second joint of each finger.

The board of trustees of the town of Holyoke at the regular meeting on June 2, after considerable discussion, voted not to have the band concerts this season because of the lack of enthusiasm toward the concerts.

Holyoke received another heavy rain and some hail Tuesday evening, June 3, which amounted to 0.75 inch. It was also reported that a cyclone struck in the territory a short distance south and east of Lamar, Nebraska, doing considerable damage to buildings and to the REA lines. Another light tornado hit southwest of Holyoke, but not much damage was reported from this twister.
