The Thrashers softball team hosted a 5K color run to open the first night of the Phillips County Fair on July 26. After the race, a Rocky Mountain oyster fry and beer garden kept the evening going, and softball players took turns at a dunking booth, with a cornhole tournament finishing up the night.

In its debut at the Phillips County Fair, the Dutch oven cookoff enticed three teams/individuals to the competition on Thursday afternoon, July 27.

Karen Weaver recently joined the staff at Regent Park Nursing & Rehab and Carriage House Assisted Living Facility as the new marketing director.

New to Holyoke Cleaners this week is a dry-cleaning machine that doubles the capacity of the current machine used in Dave and Sheila Johnson’s dry cleaning business at 105 S. Baxter Ave.

Last week, nearly 1,500 people from 51 different communities in Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa and Indiana gathered in Imperial, Nebraska, for a MobilePack event for Feed My Starving Children. Volunteers packaged 520,992 meals to feed starving children. This marks the second consecutive year that Southwest Nebraska Meals for God’s Children has sponsored the event.

Citing schedule and time conflicts, East Phillips County Hospital District Board member Steve Deaver resigned his position during the regular meeting July 24.

Aug. 7, 1997

Lester Lock Custom Ag Spraying recently crossed the border from Nebraska to become a new business in the Holyoke area. Lock will now maintain a base in each state for his spray operation.

Numerous Phillips County fairgoers took a detour from their normal route to attend the airplane display which was set up at the Holyoke Municipal Airport on Saturday afternoon. Nine planes made up an interesting display for aircraft buffs.

Two new signs welcoming visitors to the Phillips County Fairgrounds have recently been installed — one at the east car entrance and one above the main entrance from the south parking lot.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Aug. 3, 1972

Heavy rains caused flooding from the overflow of a small creek one-half mile north of the Alice Ferguson farm and about 12 miles southeast of Paoli. The flooding was caused by 5-6 inches of rain that fell in the area near the Roy Potter and Melvin Fryrear farms last Wednesday evening. Water reached depths of 2-3 feet at the Doyle Neiman farm home.

The division of highways has announced a change in operating procedures that will allow bicycles on some stretches of interstate highway. Cyclists have been barred from all interstate routes up to the present, and the new arrangement will allow them only on sections where no adjacent alternate route for bicycle travel is available.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Aug. 7, 1947

The Shew jewelry store announces the installation of a Watch Master. The Watch Master is an amazing electronic instrument for checking and timing watches. It prints a record of a watch’s performance in one or all positions in which a watch is to be worn.

The Peerless Theatre completed installation of 203 new upholstered chairs on Monday of this week. The chairs are of steel construction with leather upholstering, and with the addition of these new chairs, there are cushioned seats all the way down the building.

At last, Denver has attained one of her lifelong ambitions. According to the Bureau of Census, she and her outlying suburbs have a population totaling over one-half million people. The suburbs include Golden, Englewood, Arvada, Aurora, Edgewater, Mountainview and Cherry Hills.

What may prove to be the largest massed band concert in Colorado’s history will open the 1947 Colorado State Fair and Rodeo in Pueblo on Aug. 25. More than 2,000 high school musicians may take part in the concert as the concluding feature of the statewide high school band contest in which the fair commission is posting more than $3,500 in prizes and traveling expenses for the bands.
