In less than a week, on Monday, Aug. 21, the highly anticipated Great American Eclipse will darken the sky. In Holyoke, the sun will be 98% covered, with the maximum eclipse visible at 11:52 a.m.

Jaime and Elvira Parra opened Los Parra’s Mexican restaurant at 116 N. Interocean Ave. earlier this month.

It’s been several years since Mothers of Preschoolers has been coordinated locally, but MOPS is once again organizing in Holyoke, and a get-acquainted ice cream social is scheduled for Aug. 19 at Holyoke City Park.

 

Ten Years Ago

Aug. 16, 2012

Abts Express, a retail store featuring a wide selection of over-the-counter health products and much more, is now open in the remodeled Pamida store at 118 S. Interocean Ave. in Holyoke. The pharmacy’s owners are Travis and Melissa Bumgardner, Pharm.D.

Jon Sutton opened his small-engine repair shop Aug. 7 at 440 E. Denver St. Sutton said he will repair and work on motorcycles, scooters, lawn mowers, pumps and pretty much anything with a small engine. His garage is located between Woody’s Pivot Service and Amanda’s Mercado.

Construction progress in Holyoke School District Re-1J has moved steadily in the 81-day window from May 28-Aug. 18. Superintendent Bret Miles reported at the Aug. 7 school board meeting, noting most of the project will be complete this week. The $2.96 million project included roofing at both the JR/SR high and elementary schools; a boiler, electrical and fire alarm package; security/internet infrastructure upgrade; and other improvements including light fixtures and restroom upgrades.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Aug. 21, 1997

Emergency responders in Holyoke had a chance to practice their skills Aug. 13 when a disaster drill was staged. The scenario for the mock disaster was an explosion at the Phillips County Fairgrounds which injured a number of volunteer victims. This mock disaster required a response from EMS and the Holyoke Police Department and involved the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department for the first time.

Preschool children through senior citizens are all eligible to take advantage of the County Express bus service provided by the Northeast Colorado Transportation Authority. With Dragon’s Wagon Preschool sessions soon to start in Holyoke, NECTA personnel are encouraging parents of children who will be riding the County Express bus to make arrangements for transportation.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Aug. 17, 1972

Charles E. Pierce is the new minister at the Holyoke Church of Christ, replacing Billy P. Duncan, who transferred to Oberlin, Kansas.

The Enterprise office has 17 windbreakers, eight sweaters and six hats that have been left at the Holyoke ballpark. If you lost one of these items, it may be here.

Loren Hendrix, 9, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hendrix, Holyoke, was named all-around cowboy at the gymkhana held at St. Francis, Kansas, last Thursday night. The final High Plains Horseman Club’s gymkhana will be held during Old Settlers Day at Eckley.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Aug. 21, 1947

The state has purchased two airplanes. One is to be used by the highway department for emergency calls. The other is to be used by the Game and Fish Commission in counting animals and locating herds that have wandered away from their usual haunts. The two planes cost $10,000.

The kiddies pet parade sponsored by J.C. Penney Company was a large success Wednesday when over 50 children with entries paraded down Interocean Avenue to the Peerless Theatre for a free show.

With the addition of a Brownies troop led by Mrs. Myra Flanagan and Mrs. Glen Stenson, there will be three Brownie troops.
