Aug. 24, 2017

A high-speed chase involving Holyoke police officers ended with the driver in custody and two hostages released Thursday, Aug. 17, at approximately 3:45 p.m.

In the same year that Lions Clubs International is having its centennial celebration, members of the Holyoke Lions Club and the community that they tirelessly serve will be celebrating the local organization’s 75th anniversary. Festivities are this Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Phillips County Event Center.

 

Ten Years Ago

Aug. 23, 2012

Dave and Sheila Johnson have added an embroidery section to their business location at 105 S. Baxter Ave. in Holyoke.  They closed the laundromat portion of their business in early July, and that side of the building is now full of Holyoke Dragons apparel. The Johnsons weren’t quite settled on a name for their new venture but were leaning toward Holyoke Dragon Headquarters.

Holyoke Happenings was the name coined by Trisha Herman, the director of Phillips County Family Education Services, for the community guide that was developed and distributed at the schools and around Holyoke this May. Altogether 42 children from Holyoke and surrounding communities participated in the courses offered through the Holyoke Happenings-SUMR FUN 4U guide.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Aug. 28, 1997

Family Education Services, formerly Literacy for the ’90s, is planning an open house for Sept. 5. Those attending will be invited to tour the new facility at 221 N. Interocean Ave. in Inklings Bookstore and celebrate the start of another program year.

The local car seat program, administered by Baby’s First Steps, recently got a big boost in the form of 24 new car seats from 7News Seats for Kids.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Aug. 24, 1972

On Aug. 22, members of the Holyoke Housing Authority gathered at the site of the new senior citizen housing project for the groundbreaking ceremonies. Construction stakes have been set, and work will start immediately on the 30-unit project.

Adults having some unobligated time are asked to consider volunteering to help with a new and worthwhile project. The Holyoke Elementary School will be cooperating this year with the National Reading Center and the Colorado and United States Offices of Education in a “Right to Read” program. To ensure maximum success, additional adults are needed to work with youngsters on a one-to-one or small-group basis. Volunteers could also be of help by serving as lunchroom monitors, paper graders, lunch money collectors, etc.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Aug. 28, 1947

Postmaster F.B. Flanagan has announced that new postal regulations received by him state that effective Sept. 1 there will be no holiday delivery service of mail on the Lamar and Wray routes out of Holyoke.

Twenty-three Boy Scouts of Troop No. 230 of La Junta spent Wednesday night in Holyoke en route to Goodland, Kansas, where they will put on their Koshare Indian dance at the fair there.

The businessmen of Holyoke have signified their intention of closing their business houses on Friday afternoon, Sept. 5, in order to give their employees an opportunity to attend the Phillips County Fair that afternoon. All stores will close at 12 o’clock and remain closed the balance of the day. A few of the stores will again open up at 5 o’clock and remain open until 6 o’clock.
