The house was moved into Holyoke from 31785 County Road 24 to South Wynona Avenue on Aug. 2, 1995. Oct. 19, 2017

Phillips County Road and Bridge assistant supervisor Kevin Scott returned to Holyoke on Oct. 3 after receiving a liver transplant Sept. 1. After spending two weeks in surgery recovery and another two weeks in rehab, he is happy to be home now.

Speer Cushion Co., the cushion and upholstery business at 431 S. Interocean Ave., is set to close after 59 years. Irv and Susie Speer started the now three-generation business in 1958.

Ten Years Ago

Celebrating their humble beginnings in 1992, Phillips County Family Education Services is hosting an open house for their 20th birthday. Family Education Services first began offering English as a second language classes in 1992 and has evolved into so much more in the last two decades.

Halfway through the month of October, Holyoke has experienced some odd weather. Oct. 5, residents woke to a light snow falling. Oct. 6, much more snow fell, blanketing the area with around 5 inches or more. Just a few days earlier on Oct. 3, temperatures reached into the 90s. A week after the snow, temperatures were back in the 80s.

Oct. 23, 1997

Susan Vogelgesang and Lori Nelson have opened a new business in Holyoke. Computers Etc. opens tomorrow, Oct. 24, in a brand-new building at 218 E. Denver St. The store will offer computer hardware and software plus office supplies and a variety of services.

New and used items ranging from seasonal decorations to craft materials, antiques and some clothing will be featured in Holyoke’s new flea market type business, which is scheduled to open Oct. 29. Located at 118 N. Interocean Ave. in the former Holyoke Variety store, The This and That Shop is owned by Barb and Bill Freier.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Oct. 19, 1972

Officials of Great Western United Corporation and the Great Western Producers Cooperative today signed a purchase agreement providing for the cooperative to buy the Great Western Sugar Company, the nation’s largest processor of beet sugar.

Foundations and other preliminary work has started on the 30-unit senior citizen housing project in Holyoke. To date, 18 applications have been made to the Holyoke Housing Authority.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Oct. 23, 1947

At 7:00 in the Haxtun Methodist Church, the Philowick, which consists of the Northeastern division of the Longs Peak Council of Boy Scouts whose headquarters are in Greeley, enjoyed a bean feed. There were about 500 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, fathers and friends present, of which 25 represented Holyoke. The boys furnished their own sandwiches, and the rest of the meal, beans, was furnished.

The Holyoke chapter of the Future Farmers of America was awarded the Gold Emblem award, which is the highest honor of national type that can be awarded any FFA group. The award was made Tuesday night at the session of the national FFA convention which is being held in Kansas City, Missouri.
