Oct. 26, 2017

Two small monuments were all that remained of an almost unknown cemetery located southeast of Amherst in a wheat field until last spring. After a preservation project, several unmarked graves were discovered and a new monument has been constructed to recognize the Dunkard Cemetery.

After a nearly year-long process, PC Telcom will soon be transitioning away from their basic cable TV package.

Ten Years Ago

Oct. 25, 2012

No structures were harmed as a large fire 6 miles north of Paoli broke out Thursday morning, Oct. 18. Winds were gusting upward of 50 mph throughout the day, and Haxtun Fire Chief Steve Statz estimated the burn area to be around 1,100 acres on Friday morning. 

Holyoke School Board member Kim Killin was recently honored by the Colorado Association of School Boards when she was presented the McGuffey Award for her service.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Oct. 30, 1997

A total of 80 years, to be served consecutively, is the outcome for David Ramirez, 24. Ramirez aka Armando Hernandez aka John Doe pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder on Oct. 22. Ramirez was arrested in Texas the day after two bodies were found north of Haxtun on May 7. Under plea agreement, Ramirez will serve two 35-year prison terms for each second-degree murder charge and one 10-year term for holding a hostage during his attempted jail break in Logan County.

Husband and wife Dr. Saugato Sanyal and Dr. Saswati Gupta will be practicing medicine in Holyoke soon. Natives of India, the couple visited Holyoke this past weekend with their 9-year-old son, Samudra. Contract details with Melissa Memorial Hospital are being finalized, and the couple will be doctoring in Holyoke when their licensure goes through and when they finish up their current responsibilities in Pennsylvania.

Fifty Years Ago

Oct. 26, 1972

Town superintendent Willard Bolen will retire Nov. 1 after 29 years of service to the town of Holyoke. He started with the town on Nov. 16, 1943, and officially retired from the Holyoke Police Department in 1970 after serving the department for 27 years, with 21 years as police chief.

A 1968 blue four-door Pontiac Bonneville belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Miller of Holyoke was stolen from in front of the American Legion hall on Oct. 24 between 10 a.m. and noon. A statewide pickup has been sent out by local authorities, but as yet, no word has been received concerning the stolen car.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Oct. 30, 1947

The Holyoke chapter of Future Farmers of America was awarded the Gold Emblem Award at the 20th National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri, Oct. 19-22, for superior achievement in FFA work during the school year 1946-1947. The Gold Emblem is the highest award which an FFA chapter can attain nationally.

Two well-known Holyoke pilots have decided to fly their own planes in the future. Marvin Cox and Clarence Brase have each placed orders for a new Stinson Station Wagon this past week. They expect to go back to the factory in Wayne, Michigan, next week and fly the planes back.
