Nov. 30, 2017

The Phillips County Board of Commissioners has appointed Thom Elliott as the new sheriff. Elliott has served as undersheriff in Phillips County for the last 13 years. His promotion to sheriff came after Sheriff Rob Urbach submitted his resignation earlier this month.

For nearly 45 years, the family-owned business of Lamar Fertilizer has served the needs of farmers in Phillips and Sedgwick counties in Colorado and Chase, Perkins and Dundy counties in Nebraska. As of Nov. 9, Crop Production Services purchased Lamar Fertilizer from Pete and Paulette Dillan and son Brad.

At the Nov. 21 Holyoke City Council meeting, Superintendent Mark Brown was pleased to report that the mini park project at the intersection of Denver Street and Interocean Avenue is officially completed.

 

Ten Years Ago

Nov. 29, 2012

A new attraction will be on display during this year’s annual Holyoke Chamber of Commerce’s Country Christmas and Parade of Lights celebration Monday, Dec. 3. The Kyle and Holly Hendrix family of Wray will display reindeer from Velvet Antler Velvet Noses Reindeer Co.

Now available through Regent Park Nursing & Rehab is a respite care option. The program is offered year-round, but especially during the holiday season, people are wanting to get out of town, and Regent Park is there to help.

Eight Holyoke Dragon football players have been recognized by the North Central Conference for their efforts on the football field during the 2012 season. Additionally, HHS senior Brett Cumming has been named Co-Player of the Year.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Dec. 4, 1997

Holyoke Elementary School students read well over the 1,000-book goal for the first quarter of the 1997-98 school year through the Accelerated Reader Program. The second-quarter goal is 1,500 books. And the incentive is that teacher Harvey Eurich gets to shave Principal Jim Yakel’s mustache if the students reach their reading goal.

Since a 1% sales tax failed in the Nov. 4 election, Phillips County commissioners are searching for ways to increase income and cut expenditures in the 1998 budget. Consequently, fees at the landfill are taking a hike and numerous county services are being considered for funding cuts.

Natalie Austin of Holyoke took third place in the senior division of the 1997 Colorado Make it Yourself With Wool Competition, which was held on Nov. 15 at Crossroads Mall in Boulder.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Nov. 30, 1972

The first reply has been received by the fourth grade students of Holyoke Elementary School to their balloon launchings this year. A balloon launched Nov. 8 by Stacey Thompson was found Nov. 12 by Alvin Wiese on his farm near Lake Park, Iowa. The balloon launchings by the fourth grade are a part of a science project under the supervision of Gordon Leben, fourth grade instructor.

Mary Angeli, Holyoke, played left inner on the girls varsity field hockey team at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Angeli, Holyoke.

The FBLA chapter officers of Holyoke went to Sedgwick on the evening of Nov. 21 to conduct the charter installation ceremonies for the newly organized Revere chapter of FBLA.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Dec. 4, 1947

Holyoke has two town basketball teams participating in league play with other northeastern Colorado teams. Butane-Propane Service and Scheunemann’s store are the sponsoring firms of the two teams. League play is expected to start the latter part of this month. Other teams in the league include Haxtun, Dailey, Fleming, Sedgwick, Crook and Julesburg.

O.H. Behnfeldt of Seminole, Oklahoma, a former resident of Holyoke, has been sent to Sumatra, Dutch East Indies. He is being sent to this place by the Standard Oil Co. He has been employed by the Carter Oil Co. of Seminole for over 20 years and was chosen by them as one of the men to be sent by the Standard Oil Co. to this place, where he will be stationed until sometime in 1949.

Boy Scout Troop 32 of the Holyoke Boy Scouts will be out Saturday afternoon collecting old papers and magazines from the residents of Holyoke for their paper drive.
