Five Years Ago

Maria Rivas and her children Deisy and Jorge Guadarrama opened Chayos Mexican Food at 430 E. Denver St. on Nov. 29.

High Plains Picker was recently opened by Ryan Blumenstein in a quonset at 20970 County Road 41, with an ever-changing selection of antiques and vintage goods for sale.

Tentatively scheduled for Friday, Jan. 19, Mike Neill’s State Farm Insurance office will be moving from its current location on Denver Street to 118 N. Interocean Ave.

Randy Weis planted 130 acres of potatoes on ground owned by his mother, Darlene, southeast of Holyoke this past year and used a 15-kilowatt solar array to run the pump and sprinkler motors on his center pivot system. The installation is part of CSU’s Solar and Wind Assessments for Pivots program from the university’s Rural Energy Center.

Re-1J Foundation has joined with Heginbotham Trust and Carl and Kathy Schneller in an effort to raise funds for its current academic project — a commercial greenhouse.

 

Ten Years Ago

Dec. 27, 2012

By late morning on Dec. 19, Holyoke and much of northeast Colorado was experiencing the first major blizzard of the year. Holyoke received 3.4 inches of snow, and strong winds created drifts all over town.

Holyoke High School senior Brett Cumming was recently named to the Class 1A All-State football team. 

Three new providers have joined the specialty clinic at Melissa Memorial Hospital within the last six months. The three additions bring providers up to 18 who are working inside the specialty clinic at MMH.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Jan. 1, 1998

Boyce’s Custom Matting and Framing was started during the first of December by Boyce Wernet, although the new business is still not officially open. A wide selection of both wood and metal frames can be seen at Wernet’s shop, located at 136 W. Denver St., in the same building as Paula Carper’s Crop Insurance.

A familiar company that originated over 65 years ago is changing its name. Jacks Bean Company will be known as KBC Trading and Processing Company as of Jan. 1. 

Golden Plains Recreation Center has received a check for $20,000 for the Peerless Center from the Helen K. and Arthur E. Johnson Foundation of Denver.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Dec. 28, 1972

This year’s Smokey Bear poster contest has been expanded to include Woodsy Owl, the antipollution symbol and environmental spokesman. Children and young adults are encouraged to interpret either Smokey’s or Woodsy’s messages in original posters with illustrations and slogan. Woodsy’s motto is “give a hoot ... don’t pollute,” while Smokey reminds everyone “only you can prevent forest fires.”

Balmy weather continues to hold in the area, with daytime temperatures ranging from 42-55 degrees. Nighttime readings have ranged from 23-31 degrees. Muddy fields due to the warming trend have made the harvest of corn for grain very difficult. The condition of winter wheat is excellent, but the soggy condition of the fields has stopped any additional digging of the several hundred acres of sugar beets still in the ground.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Jan. 1, 1948

A group of local pilots played host to 73 visiting pilots and their passengers at a breakfast given at the Tighe Cafe last Sunday morning. There were 30 out-of-town planes flown in for the occasion, the plains coming from various airports in eastern Colorado and western Kansas.

Rev. and Mrs. Emil J. Moore are expected to arrive in Holyoke the last of this week to take up the pastorate of the Church of Christ.
