 Where the sign at 145 E. Denver St. once read “Ron’s,” it now says “Ron and Vanna’s,” as Savanna Krueger has set up shop alongside Ron Koch. Her specialty is nails, offering a variety of manicure and pedicure options, but she also offers hair services for her clients.

Holyoke received 6.4 inches of snow on Jan. 21. Windy conditions created large drifts, and visibility was extremely limited at times, leading to Highway 385 being closed overnight from Julesburg to Wray. Plows took to the streets early Monday, but students in Holyoke schools got to sleep in on their first snow day of the year.

Kurt Bollingberg of Bollingberg Seed Co. in Cathay, North Dakota, and Brian Engstrom of Engstrom Bean and Seed in Leeds, North Dakota, recently announced the purchase of Jack’s Bean Company, effective Nov. 15, 2012.

John Baumgartner was recently recognized in the Winter 2012-13 Colorado High School Coaches Association’s “Colorado Coach” publication. He received an achievement award for 250 wins as the Holyoke High School boys basketball coach. For 20 years of coaching, he also earned the longevity award.

Jan. 29, 1998

Holyoke city council members started the ball rolling toward a major change in zoning at the Jan. 20 meeting. The city is moving toward exclusive zoning, which will be considerably more restrictive than the current system of pyramid zoning.

Josh Whittaker, a sophomore at Holyoke High School, just returned from the ultimate road trip — 10 days competing with the Roberto Clemente All-Stars against some of Puerto Rico’s toughest amateur baseball teams.

At the Jan. 20 Holyoke city council meeting, Heginbotham librarian Laura Roth reported that the library is now the top library in the state as far as circulation among libraries serving 1,000-2,499.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Jan. 25, 1973

Members of the Holyoke Lions Club are set to start their annual broom sale tomorrow. The brooms and other household cleaning aids made by the visually handicapped throughout Colorado will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. A porch light sale of these items will be held Jan. 28 and Feb. 4. Persons in town wishing to purchase any of the items should leave their porch lights on between 7-8:30 p.m., and members of the club will stop with their wares.

A beginners swimming class for adults will be offered at the Holyoke Swimming Pool in February. This class is especially designed for nonswimmers or people who can swim no more than 15 feet.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Jan. 29, 1948

The charter members of the “H” Club at PCHS held a meeting Jan. 15, with the new lettermen as guests: Ted Siedenburg, Kenneth Ross, Raymond Hofmeister, Kenneth Tumbleson, Verne Einspahr, Don Roth and David Kelly. The initiation ceremony will be held when the letters arrive.

Estimates show that there are still over 21 million bushels of wheat on the ground in this state. When the grain was harvested, there were not sufficient cars and trucks to haul it away, and there was no place to haul it if there had been cars and trucks. It was accordingly placed in piles in the fields, where it was threshed. Over one-third of the crop is still on the ground.
