This year marked both the 10th anniversary of the East Johnson Street location of Melissa Memorial Hospital and the 100th anniversary of Holyoke’s first hospital.

In just a few short days, on Feb. 11, Clara Heermann will join the centenarian club, something only 0.0173% of the United States population reaches. 

Snapdragon Floral, located at 108 S. Interocean Ave. in Holyoke, is undergoing changes. Current owner Christy Kage’s last day in the store was Jan. 30. Kayla Kafka, Kendra Schlachter and Kim Young have agreed to open the flower shop at the current location for the Valentine’s Day holiday and will then relocate after remodeling the former State Farm Insurance building at 201 E. Denver St.

Holyoke JR/SR High School has started a new coding club this semester.

 

Ten Years Ago

Operation PC Cares, a project that is over five years strong, will continue in Phillips County, now coordinated by the local Bank of the West branch in Holyoke.

As of Jan. 28, sisters Misti Redman and Holli Purkey­pile were open and ready for business at the new Strandz Salon, located at 101 E. Emerson St.

Feb. 5, 1998

Thanks to a contribution from the Heginbotham Trust, Centennial Mental Health will be reopening its office in Holyoke on Feb. 9.

A resident of Wray is offering opportunities for 4-H members to raise emus. John Osborn of Hidden Valley Emus is giving chicks to 4-H members to raise and learn more about this flightless bird.

Holyoke Elementary School Principal Jim Yakel recently said goodbye to his mustache. Teachers Harvey Eurich and John Baumgartner had the honor of shaving it off after a deal was made by the students of Holyoke Elementary and Yakel, in which he would shave his beloved mustache if the students reached a certain goal in the Accelerated Reading program.

Fifty Years Ago

Feb. 1, 1973

The area was struck by a blizzard which started late last Friday evening. The wind-driven snow picked up momentum during the night and continued through Saturday until about 3 p.m. when the winds died down and visibility was restored.

The annual Ground Hog Supper will be held at the Lamar Trinity Church in Lamar, Nebraska, tonight.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Feb. 5, 1948

Del Harter, well-known traveler, humorist, musician, adventurer and collector, gave an interesting and informative lecture to PCHS students Jan. 29.

Another “Freedom Train” carrying Colorado farm products will start rolling in about two weeks, according to Oscar W. Lowe, Colorado director of the Church World Service. The train, the “Abraham Lincoln,” will leave Lincoln, Nebraska, on Feb. 12 and will head east, joining another from Illinois, with foodstuff for hungry Europeans.
