New to the Melissa Memorial Hospital specialty clinic, Dr. Randall Smith is set to see patients in Holyoke on Feb. 16. The ophthalmologist from Fort Collins will be a welcomed addition to the existing vision care offered at Melissa Memorial Hospital, as cataract surgery will now be available to people in and around Holyoke.

Holyoke High School’s varsity knowledge bowl team has qualified for state competition. Among 2A schools, the team placed second at regionals at Valley High School in Gilcrest on Feb. 5.

 

Ten Years Ago

Feb. 7, 2013

Aimee Ryel has taken over as the new district wildlife manager for Phillips and Sedgwick counties. 

Starting Thursday, Feb. 7, the Peerless Theatre in Holyoke will be partnering with Christian Theatrical Releasing to bring faith-based and family films to the screen.

Three news cameras and several other pieces of equipment are part of a generous gift welcomed by Holyoke High School’s TV production department. Colorado Springs’ KKTV 11 has been in the process of moving to a new station and updating to HD and robotic cameras, so they needed to find a new home for some of their equipment.

Dave Rice was inducted into the Colorado Dugout Club Hall of Fame on Jan. 18. He was one of 10 inductees chosen from 125 nominees for the class of 2013.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Feb. 12, 1998

Weather in the Holyoke area really ran the gamut over the past week. Residents woke up to snow on Thursday morning; by Sunday it was beautiful golfing weather, with highs approaching 60 degrees; on Monday it rained; and Tuesday morning there was snow on the ground again.

The Hispanic Initiative is a Spanish ministry that recently began meeting on Fridays at First Baptist Church, led by Pastor Ismael Lopez.

At their previous meeting, Holyoke city council members seemed to be sold on an ordinance implementing exclusive zoning. Now they’re not so sure. No consensus was reached on the questions raised.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Feb. 8, 1973

B52s and F111 bombers of the Strategic Air Command will begin bombing runs near Holyoke immediately. These bomber runs will continue for a period of one year and will be day or night. No bombs will be carried, and radar bomb scoring will be done electronically by an SAC technician.

Freezing drizzle moved into the area Tuesday evening, causing very hazardous driving conditions. The angle road between Holyoke and Amherst was closed due to flooding and the icy conditions.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Feb. 12, 1948

The town of Holyoke and Highline Electric Association are requesting all users of electric current to cooperate with them and use only a minimum of electricity between Feb. 15-22 in order that two of the engines of the town plant may be overhauled.

On Feb. 5, Miss Donna Schultz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Schultz of Amherst, became the bride of Perry J. Pomeroy Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry J. Pomeroy of Sterling, on the Bride and Groom radio program in Hollywood, California.

During the last six months, over 300 towns and cities have installed parking meters. The total number of cities in the nation having them now is over 1,500.
