Feb. 15, 2018

Melissa Memorial Hospital’s eighth annual Legacy Event, “Night on Broadway,” on Feb. 10 recorded $104,389 in preliminary gross funds, the most the event has ever seen since it began in 2011.

New to the Holyoke school calendar discussion this year is a look at a four-day week. Several options for both five-day and four-day weeks were reviewed by Superintendent John McCleary at the Feb. 6 school board meeting.

Evan Fust is the new general manager at CHS Grainland; his predecessor Rick Unrein has retired.

Rick Cumming recently launched Perfection Lawn LLC.

Aly Brinkema, Holyoke High School swim coach, has been recognized as the girls swimming coach of the year for the state of Colorado by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

 

Ten Years Ago

Feb. 14, 2013

While millions watched on their television sets, HHS students Nicholas Ortner and Alyssa Killin were able to witness the presidential inauguration in person, as they made the trip to Washington, D.C., as a part of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council.

The Okee Dokee Brothers won a Grammy for best children’s album at the award show in Los Angeles, California, on Feb. 10. The bluegrass duo, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing, are childhood friends from Denver. Mailander is the grandson of Marie Mailander of Holyoke.

Mike Frazier ventured to Leogane, Haiti, to serve a mission trip Jan. 12-19.

In an overtime sudden-death championship round against the team from Green Acres Elementary, the Holyoke third and fourth grade team won the Fort Morgan Optimists’ Club annual Brain Bowl last weekend.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Feb. 19, 1998

Forty-two days into the new year, First Baby of 1998 honors in Holyoke were awarded to Kolton Eric Knipp, born Feb. 1 to Keith and Jennifer Knipp.

Imperial and the surrounding area, including Holyoke, may be the recipients of a $200,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Lost Treasures is the name of a local group of young people organized by Steven D. Smith of Imperial which has applied for the Managing Information in Rural America initiative. There were 110 applications submitted, and Lost Treasures has been notified that their application is one of the top 10 nationwide.

The Holyoke Police Department is looking into starting an adopt-a-dog program and would like to establish a list of people who would be interested in taking a dog that has been impounded.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Feb. 15, 1973

Chuck Nilsen, magician and ventriloquist, will present a program tomorrow at the Holyoke High School gym. Nilsen was a member of the Hapsburg Society Circus as a clown, juggler, unicyclist, magician, balloon sculptor and ventriloquist.

The freezing drizzle that moved into the area last week brought along with it more cold weather. With the exception of last Sunday, most of the week has been very windy and cold.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Feb. 19, 1948

In a business transaction which took place Tuesday of this week, C.J. Rucker of Imperial, Nebraska, purchased the Holyoke Sales Pavilion from Emil J. Lampe, who has operated the pavilion for the past 15 months.

Harold Helgoth, formerly of Holyoke, now of Boulder, and Dave Brown, manager of the municipal airport and partner in the Boulder Flying Service, made up a two-man team in an aerial attack on marauding coyotes. The foray staged this week was believed to be the first coyote hunt by air around Boulder.
