Five Years Ago - March 1, 2018

HHS students Regan Van Overbeke, Anna Jelden and Haley Van Overbeke have started the After Class Excellence program as a community service project for FBLA. They’d envisioned maybe 10-20 elementary students taking advantage of the program, but when it started at the beginning of the month, 76 turned in permission slips.

Holyoke’s existing youth soccer program was one of the first activities suggested for the city of Holyoke’s new recreation director to take over in early 2017. This April will usher in another year of soccer, this time under the city’s rec department.

 

Ten Years Ago - Feb. 28, 2013

First Baptist Church of Holyoke is set to celebrate its 125th anniversary and a new church facility during a month-long celebration. 

Beginning Aug. 5, the United States Postal Service will be eliminating Saturday deliveries of all mail nationwide. While mail will now be delivered five days a week, USPS will continue to deliver parcels on Saturdays.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago - March 5, 1998

Dennis and Joyce Weaver of rural Arapahoe are the new owners of C.P.&S. Big A Auto Parts, located at 310 E. Denver St. in Holyoke. On March 2, they signed the papers for the business purchase from Keith and Linda Austin, Rick Ingwersen, and Paul and Betsy Austin.

Holyoke is once again in danger of losing its recycling services, and this time, the problem spreads to all of northeastern Colorado. As of March 31, Dave Thomas of Yuma Recycling Inc. will no longer be providing recycling pickup to the region.

Some very unusual weather hit Phillips County last Wednesday, Feb. 25, causing temporary changes in the lives of nearly every local resident. Blowing snow came upon Holyoke suddenly last Wednesday morning, causing limited visibility. High winds caused numerous problems that day and actually didn’t stop blowing until the weekend.

 

Fifty Years Ago - March 1, 1973

The new irrigation system at the Holyoke Memorial Park, except for a few minor adjustments and testing, is ready for use this spring. The irrigation system, fed by a 300-foot well located on the north side of the cemetery, will automatically apply one-quarter inch of water to the entire cemetery in a four-hour period.

The annual winter district meeting of the Future Homemakers of America was hosted by the Holyoke chapter on Feb. 21, with 60 representatives of the northeast district present.

In one overtime, the Lakers edged out the Cowboys 27-24 to win the grade school intramural league tournament last Saturday. The tournament concluded the grade school basketball program for another year. This marks the third year for the Saturday morning intramural and fundamentals.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago - March 4, 1948

The Amherst Co-op Grocery and Hardware was broken into sometime Friday night, and several articles were stolen, including all of the clothing which had been returned by the Holyoke Cleaners to that place earlier that day. In addition, large hams, a large quantity of weiners, several cartons of cigarettes, some gum, a large number of 1-pound boxes of candy and some canned goods were stolen, along with about $20 in cash. A portion of the stolen articles were discovered in Ovid on Sunday, where they were found in a stolen car which had a Denver license.

Several meetings have been held at the Tighe Cafe during the past two weeks for the purpose of organizing a business club for the business and professional men and women of Holyoke. A committee has been appointed to decide on a club name.

In reply to a recent letter of the county commissioners of Phillips County concerning the straightening of Highway 51 at the north edge of town and the construction of a bridge over the Frenchman Creek, it was stated that the plans which were originally made for this project were being revised to use a steel bridge in place of the construction of a wood structure.

Jos. J. Curtis, who has been the manager of Highline Electric Association for the past two and one-half years, resigned from that position last Thursday afternoon.

Rehearsals are progressing well for the big radio show, “Fun For You,” which will be presented by an all-local cast at the high school auditorium on March 10-11. The show is being sponsored by the Holyoke Lions Club for the benefit of community activities.
