March 29, 2018

Dr. Rebecca Moore is the newest addition to the medical staff at Melissa Memorial Hospital and Family Practice of Holyoke. Practicing internal medicine, Moore will begin seeing patients the first week of April.

Local education advocates turned out for a rally in Holyoke City Park on March 20 to heighten awaareness for funding issues surrounding education in the state of Colorado. Holyoke School District Superintendent John McCleary and Northeast BOCES Director Bret Miles led the rally.

Dr. Justin Newman has been honored by the Denver Business Journal as one of the top 40 outstanding professionals in the Denver area under the age of 40, the “40 Under 40.” Newman, a 1999 HHS grad and the son of Marc and Anne Newman of Holyoke, is an orthopedic surgeon at Advanced Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Specialists in Denver.

Holyoke School Board members heard a request to consider trapshooting as a sport at HHS at the March 22 Board of Education meeting.

 

Ten Years Ago

March 28, 2013

Holyoke was hit with 7.5 inches of snow over the weekend, causing many cancellations around town. Snow began to fall Friday night and continued through Saturday.

Around 220 people gathered Sunday morning, March 24, for worship, fellowship and the dedication of the new First Baptist Church facility located on the southeast edge of town at 1000 E. Johnson St.

Beginning July 1, Colorado residents no longer may dispose of most electronic waste in their household trash because Colorado landfills no longer may accept e-waste. The change is the result of a new law, the Electronic Recycling Jobs Act.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

April 2, 1998

Darrell Dennis began his position as minister at the Holyoke United Methodist Church on March 16. He and his wife Lela are getting themselves settled and are helped along by their former ties to the community, as they lived in Phillips County nine years ago.

Chuck Deaver will be honored April 6 in a recognition ceremony commending his advancement to the rank of Eagle Scout.

Holyoke Cub Scout Pack 32 held its annual Pinewood Derby race April 24, with 40 cars entered.

 

Fifty Years Ago

March 29, 1973

Tuesday night, more rain moved into the area and by Wednesday morning had turned to snow and was still snowing at this writing.

The annual Future Homemakers of America and Future Farmers of America Sweetheart Dance was held at the Holyoke Grade School gym on March 17. Rhonda Miller was crowned Miss FFA Sweetheart, and Rick Krueger was crowned FHA Beau.

At the recent annual meeting of the Colorado Pork Producers in Denver, housewives from the five-county Denver metro area were invited to attend. The goal was to clear up the many existing misconceptions on the preparation and consumption of pork. On the panel of experts was Jerry Cox of Holyoke Pork Producers.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

April 1, 1948

To promote safety among the bicyclists of Holyoke, the Lions Club, in cooperation with Patrolman Joe Relihan of the Colorado State Patrol, has started a “Scotchlite-a-Bike” campaign in which they will equip every bicycle in the community with the reflective material, brilliantly visible to motorists at night when headlight beams strike its surface. With white Scotchlite on the handlebars and front fork and red Scotchlite on the rear fender, bicycles are plainly visible at long distances.

Spring temperatures fell to 37 degrees on Thursday night, accompanied by high winds and rain, which brought the worst snowstorm this community has had all winter. Friday morning, the snow was accompanied by high winds which made it almost impossible to see if driving.

The Phantom Ship, a one-act operetta given by the upper grades of the Holyoke Grade School, will be presented to the public on April 2.
