Peekin' into the Past

    After serving 30 years with the Colorado Division of Wildlife, with the last 20 as the district wildlife manager in the Phillips County area, Jack Wieland is moving on to other things and hopes to have more time for his hobbies.
    As of June 13, Subway in Holyoke began operating under new ownership, with owners Pete and Kristin Sorensen and Phil and Karen Trippet of Fort Collins taking over the local restaurant. Co-owners Teresa Mailander and Leo Mailander of Holyoke opened the local Subway restaurant in 2003, and it’s been exactly nine years since they opened their doors on June 12, 2003, and their last day of business on June 12, 2012.
    Building on the success of the Ben Cox 155 held just one year ago at Ballyneal Golf Club southeast of Holyoke, the Hundred Hole Hike network was formed. HHH is a national network of golf marathons where participants plan to walk 100 or more holes of golf in one day in order to raise money for various worthwhile charitable causes. Ballyneal is on target for the HHH event June 25.

    Torrential rains June 11-12 wreaked havoc, with waters sweeping out areas of the ground supporting the railroad tracks that run parallel to Highway 23 from Holyoke to Amherst and causing road closures on Highway 23 to Amherst and Highway 6 to Imperial, Nebraska.
    Zach Krueger, a 2007 graduate of HHS, was recently recognized in the Rocky Mountain News as 2A baseball’s Player of the Year.

June 25, 1992

    Office space rental is the plan for the new building which is scheduled to go up in the 100 block of South Campbell Avenue in the lot across the street to the east of Shop-All in Holyoke. A home on the site was recently torn down, and final plans for the office building will be made soon by the owners, the Leo R. Mailander family.
    Acel “Ace” Thacker has been hired as the administrator at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke. His first day in the office will be July 20.
    George Strait and Sawyer Brown will highlight the star attractions at the 1992 Chase County Fair in Imperial, Nebraska.
    Joining the businesses at Central Street Shoppes is Stage Cuts, a family hairstyling salon operated by Ron Koch.

June 22, 1967

    The weather continued to make headlines in northeast Colorado during the past week as frequent drenching rain and hailstorms caused property damage, battered crops and dimmed the farm outlooks across a large area. Frenchman Creek crested higher than it has for a number of years on Sunday.
    Keith Austin, owner and operator of Austin’s Body Shop here, assumed new duties as Phillips County undersheriff June 15, serving under Sheriff Fred Thietje.

June 25, 1942

    The Holyoke Ministerial Alliance, at a meeting Tuesday evening, voted to sponsor a united ringing of church bells each evening at 5 o’clock in an effort to call all people to prayer. Object of this united prayer fellowship each day is to regain spiritual resources and to intercede for those who are in the armed forces of this nation and who are helping to retain that freedom which we now enjoy.
    J.G. Scholl, chairman of the Phillips County scrap rubber campaign, reported yesterday afternoon that 86,064 pounds of rubber articles had been accumulated in the county during the first nine days of the national drive. This amount represents 43 tons and 64 pounds of rubber scrap which will be contributed toward the nation’s war effort.
