A massive mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicle weighing 26 tons and valued at half a million dollars should have no trouble handling whatever blizzards come its way. New to Phillips County Sheriff’s Office, the MRAP vehicle is intended to do search and rescue in conditions that would otherwise make such tasks impossible.

For the first time ever, unaffiliated voters in Colorado will be able to participate in the primary election without affiliating with either the Republican or Democratic party. This is the result of Proposition 108, which was approved by Coloradans in 2016.

Josh Schroetlin, an English teacher at Holyoke High School, recently received the Boettcher Foundation’s Teacher Recognition Award. He was nominated for the honor by 2018 Boettcher Scholarship winner Luke Krogmeier.

Scholl’s communications department, previously housed in the Scholl Oil headquarters at 800 E. Denver St. in Holyoke, has relocated to Scholl’s downtown store — Printers Paper & More at 118 S. Interocean Ave.

For 37 years, Cathy Sullivan has welcomed kids into her classroom at Holyoke Elementary, but when the children exit the building for summer break on May 24, Sullivan will officially begin her retirement.

Holyoke Elementary School art teacher Christina Martinez has been elected to serve with the Colorado Art Educators Association as the regional board representative for the northeast region.

On May 2, VM Odells LLC, the owner of Bella’s Market operating in Wray, filed in federal court to sell the Wray store to NECO Grocery LLC, a grocery operator with a store in Holyoke and an affiliate store in Imperial, Nebraska.

May 21, 1998

A thorough review of the airport runway expansion proposal and rejection of the proposed zoning regulations are being requested by 12 landowners who own property surrounding the existing and proposed Holyoke Airport runways.

Citing itinerant traffic as the most important thrust for the proposed runway at the Holyoke Airport, the local Aviation Association is showing active support for the city’s airport program.

After a major cutback from its fireworks funding, Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department is nearly desperate for ways to replenish financial supplies for the annual 4th of July bang. The cutback came when the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce decided to cut its portion of the funding meant for the annual fireworks display.

 

Fifty Years Ago

May 17, 1973

May 31 has been designated as the completion date for the Holyoke Housing Authority project in Holyoke. The units are expected to be ready for occupancy by June 15.

A coyote bounty system has been proposed in the Colorado General Assembly. According to House Bill 1598, introduced by Rep. Baer, $25 would be paid for each coyote killed in the state.

May 20, 1948

Rats are one of the most destructive of all rodents. The fish and wildlife commission of Colorado, in cooperation with the sanitation commission and the public health department, have outlined a program to aid the public in exterminating this menace on their property. In Phillips County, the towns are furnishing the bait and will have someone who is experienced in handling it to spread the bait on your property.

A Haxtun youth was arrested at his home Tuesday evening by Sheriff H.M. Clements on suspicion of burglarizing the Cheney Liquor Store in Haxtun early Tuesday morning. The liquor store was entered between midnight and 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, and $90 was taken from a desk in the rear of the building.
