Five Years Ago

May 24, 2018

Holyoke sophomore Taeryn Trummper marked an 18-foot-1.75-inch jump to claim the gold medal in the 2A girls long jump on May 18 at JeffCo Stadium in Lakewood in the Colorado State Track & Field Championships.

In a whirlwind of a year, Wyatt Bishop decided to pursue a career in law enforcement, applied to an academy, graduated and became a deputy with Phillips County Sheriff’s Office.

Through Holyoke School District’s efforts and involvement with the Student-Centered Accountability Program, the district is being added to the original core group, which included five school districts.

 

Ten Years Ago

May 23, 2013

Almost a year to the day after breaking ground west of Holyoke, construction for the new Seaboard Foods feed manufacturing facility has been completed. The new feed mill will employ 18 people and will run around the clock five days a week.

Mary Austin marks her last week at Holyoke Elementary School as she retires at the end of the 2012-13 school year after 20 years in education.

Starting June 3, the weight room at Holyoke High School will open its doors to the public. Available through Aug. 7, morning workouts at the high school will be an option for those interested in utilizing the weight room.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 28, 1998

After a year of no serious interest in the former Holyoke municipal building, the city council was surprised to have two bids to consider at its May 19 meeting. After discussing and debating the issue, the city accepted a bid from Bob Trumper for just over half its asking price.

About 30 people showed up at a meeting May 21 to figure out how to keep recycling going in Holyoke. And at least for the time being, it will.

A new building for the Wages Fire Department has become a reality.

 

Fifty Years Ago

May 24, 1973

Means Lake, located approximately 6 miles northwest of Holyoke, was filled almost to capacity a week ago from the flooding waters fed into the lake by the Frenchman Creek.

The Re-1J district school board at their May 16 meeting voted to purchase a bus washer for approximately $590.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

May 27, 1948

R.L. Anderson, authorized dealer for Gambles Stores in Holyoke, will hold the formal opening of his new store located at 416 Interocean Ave. on May 29. The store has been completely remodeled.

The Belmont Florist, which is located at 1043 Furry St. and is owned and operated by Mrs. Rex Starns and her daughter, Sara, will be open for business on May 29. The front of the Starnses’ residence has been remodeled and enclosed in order to make room for the new shop.
