At the June 5 Holyoke City Council meeting, City Superintendent Mark Brown reported that aerators in the sewer lagoons are getting plugged once or twice daily and crews are struggling to keep ahead of the problem. The primary culprit is “flushable” wipes.

Chas Lengfelder is a new member of the Holyoke School District Re-1J Board of Education, filling the vacancy that occurred with the recent resignation of Dennis Herman.

Recent HHS grad Taylor Hendrix has been elected to serve as an executive committee member on the 10-person state FFA officer team.

Holyoke Cleaners owners Dave and Sheila Johnson have announced they plan to close their business at the end of the month.

 

Ten Years Ago

June 13, 2013

Weld County commissioners hosted a recent meeting of northeastern Colorado commissioners to propose a new state called North Colorado.

Kyle Hendrix is building a herd of exotic animals, like camels and reindeer, just south of Holyoke.

After months of planning and preparation, Holyoke’s 125th celebration and the 13th annual Dandelion Daze Car Show are set for Friday-Sunday, June 14-16.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

June 18, 1998

The Phillips County Farm Service Agency and the Natural Resource Conservation Service are in the process of collocating at the present FSA office building. Construction is underway, to be completed in the very near future.

Holyoke’s controversial airport expansion project may be heading in a slightly different direction in the near future — 10 degrees to be exact. At a special meeting of the city council on June 11, members considered a new alignment of the proposed runway and its accompanying goals, requirements and costs.

Robert Killorin, a board certified and licensed occupational therapist who works in Holyoke at the nursing home, hospital, home health and physical therapy, has developed a sensory spa at Prairie Vista Care Center.

As an unusual new business in town, Richard and Nancy Cassel will be supplying cotton candy, sno-cones and popcorn all summer to Holyoke residents. 

 

Fifty Years Ago

June 14, 1973

A mini pageant under the auspices of the Miss Colorado Pageant Association was held recently in Holyoke. Cynthia Margaret Colver, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.O. Colver, was selected by the judges to represent Holyoke at the Miss Colorado pageant to be held in Sterling the week of July 8-15.

Rain received in varying amounts in the area late Monday night and early Tuesday morning will help winter wheat and spring field crops in the county. Topsoil was becoming dry throughout the area. Unofficially, precipitation amounted to about an inch.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

June 17, 1948

A large crowd which has been estimated to be in the neighborhood of 5,000 people attended the power line dedication ceremonies and merchandise show in Holyoke last Friday. The day, which was well rounded out with free entertainment and a free lunch at noon, was sponsored by the Holyoke Booster Club and the merchants of Holyoke.

The Colorado State patrolman has issued a warning to all motor scooter owners that the small machine must have a motorcycle license, brake and light sticker, and the driver must be 16 years of age and have an operator’s license.

Wind and hail which struck this community the fore part of this week did an unestimated amount of damage to both property and small crops in this area.
