An open house has been planned for July 21 at Camp Machasay so people can see the progress on the new multipurpose building. It’s the first structure on the grounds built specifically for the camp’s purposes. To date, existing buildings have been used creatively to meet the camp’s needs.

The Dragon Booster Club’s mouse races, the first fundraiser of the 2018-19 school year, sold 246 tickets. Booster club president Marla Camblin said the club plans to make the races an annual event.

Velva Notter and her late husband Bill were named 2013 Historical Master Breeders by the Brown Swiss Historical Society at the recent National Brown Swiss Convention July 3-6 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

After 40 years in the real estate business in Holyoke, Dorothy Scott is exchanging the work world for retirement.

Dale Longan, D.C., announced last week that he plans to retire and has sold his chiropractic practice and clinic in Imperial, Nebraska. Daniel Koch, D.C., and his wife, Kristin, both Holyoke natives, have purchased the business.

July 23, 1998

Liz Evans recently joined Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department, becoming the first female firefighter on HVFD.

Working on the motto “It’s time to travel more,” Michelle Heldenbrand is throwing her energy into a new business, TravelMore LLC. Heldenbrand, along with employees DeeAnn Dubbert and Cindi Beavers, will be ready to open the doors to the new travel agency on Aug. 3. The business will be located in the former McDonalds Physical Therapy building at 133 W. Denver St.

 

Fifty Years Ago

July 19, 1973

Knight and Son Carpet Center, located in the old Safeway building, will hold its grand opening the week of July 21-28. The carpet center, owned and operated by Roy Knight and his son Pete, is operated during the day by Mrs. Pete Knight.

Holyoke will host the 1973 14-15-year-old district Babe Ruth tournament starting tomorrow (Friday) and running through Sunday. Teams competing are Border, East Central (East), Sterling, Highway 36, Northeastern and East Central (West).

Northeastern Junior College, Sterling, received designation as an area vocational school by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education at its May 25 meeting. The long-sought designation will place the institution in line to receive federal funds for capital construction.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

July 22, 1948

Several members of the Holyoke Gun Club were in attendance at the Colorado State Trap Shoot, which was held July 17-18 in Denver at the municipal traps at Sloan’s Lake. Gerald Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Miller of Holyoke, won the junior singles championship and a gold Elgin wristwatch.

Not generally known, but 20% of the population of the nation lives in areas that have been voted dry territory. Over 26 million people are in such areas. Kansas, Mississippi and Oklahoma are dry throughout. There are over 10,000 local government units in the nation that are dry.
