Lawana Browning of Holyoke, born Feb. 29, 1936, celebrated her 19th birthday on leap day this year.
Holyoke City Council members heard a brief update about the Internet Crimes Against Children initiative from Phillips County Sheriff’s Deputy Barry Winckler at their Feb. 21 meeting. Winckler said the program is going so well that he has taken on many more areas in addition to Phillips County.
Holyoke Enterprise publisher Brenda Brandt officially accepted the Colorado Press Association president’s gavel from past president Bob Moore at the annual convention Feb. 25. Brandt served as vice president last year and assumed the role of CPA board president in October 2011 when she stepped in to serve the remainder of Moore’s term after he accepted a job in Texas. She will stay on for another year after being elected president during the CPA annual meeting Feb. 23.

March 1, 2007

A year of water use and a $10 connection fee waiver were donated by Holyoke City Council to help foster the growth of a Community Garden in Holyoke. The donation was approved at the Feb. 20 regular meeting after hearing a presentation from Phillips County Extension horticulturist Linda Langelo.
A quilt by Barb Holtzman of Holyoke has been recognized and chosen to be featured in a Museum of American Quilter’s Society exhibit. The quilt, titled “Five Sisters,” is among 17 winning quilts of the 2007 Rose of Sharon-themed New Quilts from an Old Favorite contest.

Big A Auto Parts — C.P.&S. Inc. — is set to open March 16 in Holyoke at 310 E. Denver St. and will include an auto repair and service shop in addition to the auto parts aspect of the business. Owners of the business are Rick Ingwersen, Keith and Linda Austin, Paul Austin and Tammy Lininger.
Hal  Goldback from Cellular Inc. was the guest speaker at the Phillips County Telephone Company annual meeting Feb. 27. Cellular Inc. began a partnership with Phillips County Telephone Company eight years ago. Goldback and Cellular Inc. have visions of cellular phone capabilities here in Phillips County and many other places around northeastern Colorado within the next two and a half years.
The newly organized Phillips County Amateur Radio Club is offering a free course to prepare individuals for their beginning ham radio operator’s license.
Temperatures reached above 70 degrees on the last day of February and the first two days of March.

March 2, 1967

The Enterprise’s new newspaper press is now in operation, and this week’s issue is the first Enterprise to be printed on it. It took a machinist from Denver and a couple of helpers most of last week to assemble the 10-ton outfit, but now it purrs like a — well, not like a kitten — more like a herd of tigers!
A crowd estimated at more than 1,000 attended open house at Holyoke’s new indoor swimming pool Sunday afternoon.
The coming annual farmer-businessmen banquet and the possibility of establishment of a radio station and Extension specialists’ offices here were the principal topics at a Chamber of Commerce dinner meeting Tuesday afternoon.
S & T Sales and Service of Paoli, owned by Lee Schnieder and Robert Thompson Sr., has been appointed as a dealership for International Harvester equipment.

Seventy-five Years Ago
March 5, 1942

Information released yesterday at the office of the Phillips County tire rationing board, No. 37, was to the effect that the rationing of sugar will be commenced soon throughout this county and other counties of the state. The rationing program will be conducted under direction of boards now handling the rationing of tires and tubes.
Holyoke High School Dragons closed the 1941-1942 basketball season Friday evening by defeating the Haxtun first and second cagers on a return game played in the local gymnasium. In defeating the Haxtun five, Coach Werner’s first-string team ended the season an undefeated five. As champions of the Eastern Colorado league, the Dragons will enter the District 8 basketball tournament this weekend.
