    Bill Spindler sold Spindler Lumber to Tom Wirges on Nov. 1. Wirges has renamed the business Holyoke Building Center.
    Phillips County recently purchased the Scormor Lanes property east of the courthouse to use for storage for the County. Bob Thompson and Marshall Thompson owned the local bowling alley for nearly 30 years before deciding to close it this year. The building started as a roller rink in 1947.

    The Bonfils-Stanton Foundation recently announced a grant of $50,000 to support the construction of the Phillips County Event Center.
    The HHS drama department will present two melodramas this weekend— “Tied to the Tracks or Bound by Her Convictions” and “Lily, the Virtuous Seamstress or She Was So Good She Never Dropped a Stitch.”
    HHS senior football players Landon Dirks and Michael Hoffner were recently notified of their selection to compete in the second annual Diamond Head Football Senior Classic June 10-17, 2008, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

    A courthouse remodeling project that began in 1986 with a space needs analysis has almost drawn to a conclusion. The Phillips County Board of Commissioners and other elected officials are hosting an open house on Nov. 20 to celebrate the completion of the second phase of courthouse remodeling.
    While actual operation of the Phillips County Enhanced 911 service will be somewhat later than originally anticipated, late spring of 1993 now looks like a realistic implementation date.
    Kellie White of Holyoke recently received the highest degree of membership awarded by the National FFA Organization — the American FFA Degree.
    The Haxtun Fishing is Fun project is now in the process of being filled with water. The pond is located on the Haxtun Gun Club property, a half mile west and one and a quarter miles south of Haxtun.

Nov. 16, 1967

    Several local high school students have been working on a project to get a teen center started in Holyoke. It is planned to make the center a get-together place for teenagers, and it would be operated by them.
    Mild temperatures returned to Phillips County and the rest of the High Plains this week following a cold spell that dropped the mercury to 6 degrees in Holyoke the night of Nov. 2. High readings for the week ending Tuesday ranged from 57 to 72 degrees.
    The largest initial payment ever made for sugar beets grown by farmers in this area will be paid Nov. 18 by the Sterling factory of Great Western Sugar Co. The amount per ton will average $12.20, and the total will be $1,952,825.65, compared to an average company payment of $9.94 per ton on the first payment made last year.

Nov. 19, 1942

    Collection of all discarded women’s silk and nylon hosiery has been started in the Holyoke community, with salvage depots located at Hester’s, Penney’s and Scheunemann’s stores in Holyoke. Silk and nylon are needed for the production of powder bags and for other war materials.
    Turkey packing, which has been underway at the local Swift company plant for the past 10 days, was completed Wednesday, with 6,888 birds handled during the run. This was five carloads, or more than 150,000 pounds.
    Persons who could not be given war ration book 1 because they had excess sugar on hand at the time of registration last May or who have since surrendered the book must register before Dec. 15 or they will not be able to procure war ration book 2.
