
The James W. Young Reservoir was one source of getting ice for summer use of the town in the early days of Holyoke. Ice from the reservoir was cut in the winter and packed in sawdust to store for summer use in keeping perishable foods cool. Young also hosted skating parties in the winter. Several proposed changes for 2013-14 to the Holyoke School District grading policy and Academic Opportunity Center were reviewed at the May 21 meeting of the Board of Education. Two years ago, the AOC was created as a pilot program requiring students to correct all assignments, and last year it became policy. For 2013-14, the primary proposed change notes that unit assessments will be given only one time at the JR/SR high and students will not have the opportunity to correct tests.
Colorado State University Extension is offering a new summer camp called GEAR-Tech-21, aimed at introducing youth to robotics and GPS/GIS technologies, at three sites in northeast Colorado — Akron, Holyoke and Yuma.

East Phillips County Hospital District Board members voted unanimously to sign a contract presented by PC Telcom to purchase the old Family Practice medical clinic building at 520 S. Interocean Ave. Tentative closing date is set for Aug. 20.
Sixth-graders will move to the JR/SR high for the 2008-09 school year, as a result of a second vote of Holyoke Re-1J Board of Education at its May 20 meeting after community members gathered close to 170 signatures on a petition asking the board to reconsider.
At the May 20 Holyoke school board meeting, the board voted unanimously to implement the random drug testing for students in grades 7-12 who are involved in extracurricular activities.

A 2-mile run, bicycle races and sidewalk sales are scheduled in Holyoke for Saturday, June 5, during Holyoke Chamber of Commerce’s second annual Merchants Day.
Seven Holyoke Elementary School students set 11 new records in the May 27 Field Day activities, and two other records were tied.
While a number of items were on the May 27 meeting agenda of the State Board of Land Commissioners when it met in Holyoke, the topic of lease discussion on irrigated crop lands drew the most crowd comment. Around 50 were on hand for the meeting.

Using construction and sale of a home in Holyoke last summer by the carpentry class of Holyoke High School as an example, if not an exact pattern, school board members in Kansas City, Missouri, may embark on a similar project this summer.
Emmanuel Winkler, 53, a laborer in this community, was arrested Monday by Phillips County Sheriff Fred Thietje and charged with burglary at the J & F Cafe here late Sunday afternoon, May 26. Formerly of the Sterling area, Winkler served two years in the state penitentiary a few years ago after being found guilty of attempted robbery at The Peerless Theatre in Holyoke.

The new method of speeding up mail deliveries, through addition of a branch post office number to the address on mail for delivery in large cities, is being placed in operation rapidly. Residents of 178 cities of the nation have been assigned a branch number for their section of the city in order that delivery of mail may be expedited.
Collection of rags, old rope and burlap will become increasingly important in the wartime salvage program of Colorado women. War production board officials in Washington report there exists at present a critical shortage of cotton wiping cloths for proper and efficient maintenance of nearly all forms of machinery producing for war.
A meeting of the school directors of Phillips County schools will be held at the high school Saturday evening for the purpose of discussing the new state aid law for schools. Under the terms of the law, it is claimed that most of the schools in the county will benefit from the county participating in the setup, but a few districts that have several miles of railroad track to increase the assessed valuation of their districts will lose a part of their revenue.
