Elisa Sagehorn, a 2008 HHS graduate, has been selected to serve as an FFA executive committee member for the state of Colorado. FFA Colorado State Convention was June 3-5 at NJC in Sterling.
Recent HHS grad Taytum Kelley has been added to the list of local students who will attend the University of Colorado in Boulder on the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship — a full-tuition and housing college scholarship renewable for up to four years.
Gas prices skyrocketed to new highs on June 9, pushing the national average past the $4 mark at $4.02 per gallon. That’s 10 percent higher than the average of $3.69 a month ago.

After 10 years as the librarian at Heginbotham Library, Rose Kreher has resigned from her position, effective July 31.
For the second straight year, Holyoke High School’s FFA chapter claims the state FFA reporter. As Richard Fagerlin completed his year in office at the June 10-12 State Convention in Longmont, Elaine McCallum, a 1993 HHS graduate, was elected to serve for 1993-94. In addition, adviser Tom Fey, who will be leaving Holyoke School District, was recognized at the convention as Ag Teacher of the Year, as nominated by the HHS students.
A newly organized Fellowship of Christian Athletes group in Holyoke is meeting on Friday nights at 8 p.m. at City Park by the tennis courts. Slated for those in seventh grade through college age, the FCA program includes meetings and fun activities.

A week ago Tuesday, a sow owned by Elwin Poe of the Pleasant Valley community gave birth to nine pigs. Then on Tuesday of this week, 11 more pigs showed up in her pen! Elwin figures there were two litters rather than an interrupted delivery of one litter. Whichever way it is, it’s a rare occurrence.
A scuba course will be offered at the Holyoke pool by an instructor from Sidney, Nebraska, if 10 or more people sign up for it, according to Gary Sperber, supervisor of the local swimming pool.
The Town of Holyoke has received a clean bill of health from the Mountain States Inspection Bureau in regard to its fire protection facilities. The bureau recently completed a periodic inspection of fire protection facilities here, and the town was given a classification of 7, which is considered very good for a town of this size. A high rating on fire protection facilities means lower fire insurance rates for the town’s residents.

A tin can salvage depot will be built north of the Phillips County Telephone Company office, where residents of the Holyoke community may take their old cans so they may be collected for shipment to a detinning station.
Suggested wages for unskilled labor in harvest were set at 50¢-60¢ an hour, based on a 10-hour day, at a meeting of farm labor committees from five counties of northeastern Colorado and southwestern Nebraska at Wray on Wednesday of last week. The suggested wage for skilled labor was fixed at 60¢-90¢, also based on a 10-hour day.
Holding of a two-day fair on a reduced scale in Holyoke late in the season, after the state fair, was discussed by the Holyoke Lions Club at its meeting Thursday of last week. Because of shortage of labor, no great amount of agricultural exhibits is expected, but the 4-H clubs of the county will probably enter in the livestock exhibit.
