Despite the cold, damp and foggy weather which prevailed, a good-sized crowd of men and some women were on hand Dec. 21, 1947, to participate in the second turkey shoot sponsored by the Holyoke Gun Club since its reorganization last fall. The first shoot of the season was held Nov. 23, just prior to Thanksgiving. The shooting lasted throughout the day, with 151 squads of five men each trying their skill at shooting blue rock in order to win their Christmas turkey. During the day, the local club handed out 167 turkeys, 180 hams, four geese and two slabs of bacon. Noted among those present were men from Julesburg, Wray, Sterling, Haxtun, Venango, Nebraska, and Chappell, Nebraska. — Source: Phillips County Museum
