Five Years Ago — Feb. 13, 2014
Flames stretched into the cold winter night sky as a fire engulfed a Holyoke home at 601 W. Gordon St. on Feb. 4. Luckily the home was empty and no one was hurt in the incident that caused extensive smoke and fire damage to the property.
President Barack Obama officially signed the Farm Bill into law Feb. 7. The bill, which provides Colorado’s farmers and ranchers with much-needed certainty and predictability, cuts the red tape by consolidating and streamlining dozens of programs and ultimately reduces the deficit by $23 billion.
Holyoke Junior High School students will have an opportunity to learn about careers available in Holyoke by visiting several businesses Feb. 19. This Career Awareness Day is being implemented by Holyoke FBLA members Xander Nelson, Tyler Camblin and Austin Herman.
Ten Years Ago — Feb. 12, 2009
Lending a helping hand, Holyoke City Council agreed to donate some much-needed funds to Phillips County Victims Assistance Office. The decision was reached after director Shawna Bergstrom approached the council with the request at the regular Holyoke City Council meeting on Feb. 3.
This semester, Holyoke Elementary School has welcomed student teacher Nicole Churchwell into Lynn Schneider’s third-grade classroom.
Twenty-Five Years Ago — Feb. 17, 1994
Leon Atkins of Haxtun officially announced last week that he will be rebuilding his Case International dealership on the east edge of Holyoke, northwest of John Baldwin Chevrolet-Buick Co.
Along with revised hours, the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce office now features a new secretary. Sara Pedotto began her position with the chamber on Feb. 10. Last October, the chamber headquarters were moved to 124 S. Interocean Ave., and Pedotto now conducts office hours at the new site.
Haxtun farmer Lauren Heermann officially announced his candidacy for state representative in House District 65 last Thursday.
Fifty Years Ago — Feb. 13, 1969
The Last Resort recreation hall and tavern in Amherst was broken into sometime during the night of Feb. 5, and the American Legion club in Haxtun was burglarized between 3 a.m. Sunday morning and 10 a.m. Monday morning of this week. Stolen from Last Resort were five cases of beer and $10 in change. In the Haxtun break-in, about $236 in cash was taken.
Junior Girl Scouts are taking orders this week for Girl Scout cookies. They sell for 50 cents a box and are of five varieties.
Seventy-Five Years Ago — Feb. 17, 1944
About eight families from the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota have spent the fall and winter in this community. Most of them came to Phillips County last fall to shuck corn. They began work in the Haxtun community and have worked east. Due to the recent snows, corn picking has been stopped, so there are several weeks of work for them yet.
O.H. Helland has been in the possession of the first yearly volume of The Logan County News, which was published in Holyoke beginning Aug. 9, 1887. The book was given to Mr. Helland by Mrs. Joseph H. Painter, widow of the former publisher of the State Herald at Holyoke. Mr. Helland has entrusted the volume of The News to the editor of The Enterprise.
Mrs. Martha Droughton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. White of Holyoke, took possession of Morgan’s Beauty Shop on Feb. 14. It is located below the post office and was formerly owned and operated by Mrs. Clara Morgan.
