    A recommendation for changing the way HHS determines class rank for graduating seniors was presented by Principal Susan Ortner at the Feb. 18 school board meeting. The recommendation rewards students who have challenged themselves by taking at least five courses/10 credits of the recommended college/AP credits in core class areas.
    Anyone who has had to purchase propane in the past few months probably noticed a considerable hike in the price. The historical rise in propane costs can be attributed to a number of factors in the last few months.
    Local weather observer Dan Kafka reported a total of 7.2 inches of snow in the Feb. 22-23 snowfall.

    HHS junior Chad Stroh became the first Dragon ever to win two state wrestling championships after winning the 125-pound 2A division at the Pepsi Center in Denver this past weekend. Last year he won the 119-pound division.
    A report to the Chase County (Nebraska) Sheriff’s Office regarding the unlawful use of a semitruck and trailer last month has led to a number of charges against an alleged thief. John Arterburn’s semi and trailer had been parked inside his locked shop in Lamar, Nebraska, but it was discovered parked outside on Jan. 20. Further investigation led to the discovery of theft of wheat in the Phillips County area, with Yuma County Grain employees confirming that a truck matching Arterburn’s had delivered a large load of wheat there. Justin Lundgren was arrested by Haxtun police on Feb. 21 on warrants that charge him with felony burglary and two counts of criminal mischief.
    Barbara Holtzman has written a step-by-step quilting instruction book entitled “Quilts in My Cubicle,” in which she shares 12 monthly quilts that can be done in a small amount of time and can easily be displayed in a cubicle.
    Retiring after 28 years as a family and consumer science Extension agent, 18 of which were spent at Phillips County Extension office, Bonnie Sherman marked the final week of February as her last before moving on to her retirement years in Illinois.

March 3, 1994

    David Lorenzo started his pharmacy internship at Holyoke Drug Co. on Feb. 22 and will be in Holyoke until March 31. While here, he will be able to perform all duties of a pharmacist under the license and watchful eye of Erick Rumold.
    Former resident Wayne Heimer was presented the State Statesman Award at the national convention of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep, acknowledging appreciation for his outstanding contributions to Alaskan sheep management. The 1961 HHS graduate is in his 23rd year as a wildlife biologist for the Alaska Fish and Game Department.
    Students from Holyoke High School made an impressive showing at the Northeastern Colorado Regional Science Fair at NJC Saturday. Holyoke brought home Best of Fair honors, as well as three Best of Category awards.
    March 5 will mark the 100th anniversary of the creation of the public trustee system in the state of Colorado.
    
Fifty Years Ago
Feb. 27, 1969

    Wrestling was started recently at the junior high. According to coach Gary Sperber, the squad has grown to 15 seventh-graders and nine eighth-graders. In junior high, there are 18 weight classes, 65-145 pounds at 5-pound increments, plus the heavyweight class. The Pirates team will need boys to fill four or five more weight classes before they can have a full team.
    The board of directors of the East Phillips County Hospital District requests that the public dial 17 for ambulance service. Many still call the mortuary, where a driver is not always available.
    The Holyoke Bakery, which has been located in the building at the rear of the Holyoke Auto and Hardware store for the past couple of years, will move this weekend to the building formerly occupied by The Holyoke Enterprise. The name will be changed to Taylor Maid Bakery. Co-owners of the bakery are Ralph and Terry Taylor.
    
Seventy-Five Years Ago
March 2, 1944

    Four hundred eighty-six rural fires on private and State-owned land caused $284,000 worth of damage to farm and ranch homes and buildings, range pastures, crops and forecasts in Colorado this past year, report R.E. Ford and C.L. Terrell at Colorado State College in Fort Collins.
    Contributions to the subscription fund for Phillips County people in the military services are keeping pace with the growth of the subscription list. On March 1, there were 270 names of persons in the services to whom the Enterprise is being mailed. Of this number, 235 have been paid for by friends, relatives or organizations whose contributions were made especially for the persons named.
    After fighting mumps and bad roads, the Wages Community First Aid class was completed last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Art Ferguson. There were 12 that finished the course and took the final examination.
    There were 1,023 car licenses issued for 1944 by Feb. 28 by the county clerk’s office here, compared to 1,172 on the same date last year. This indicates that there are 149 fewer passenger cars licensed in Phillips County than in 1943.
