Rainfall threatened off and on all day in Holyoke on Aug. 27, with sporadic sprinkles and sudden downpours throughout the day. But when the rain started in earnest around 8 p.m., it came fast and hard and didn’t let up for more than two hours. Reports varied, but consistently gauges were showing upward of 4 inches in the deluge.

The efforts of Restoring Colorado to put a citizen’s initiative on the November ballot to change representation in the Colorado House of Representatives fell short of the minimum 86,105 signatures needed.

A new aeration system has been installed at the fishing pond and is working to clear up the algae problem that Lions Club members have been facing for the past few years.

Italian student Martina Ghezzi will be attending Holyoke High School as this year’s only exchange student.

Over 200 classic cars will be auctioned off Sept. 6 at the Bullock Chevrolet auction in Grant, Nebraska.

Dennis Firme received the Outstanding District Conservationist of the Year award at the 63rd annual meeting of the Haxtun Conservation District.

Progress for a third volume of “Those Were the Days” history book is in the works. Phillips County Historical Society board members decided to publish the book because Volume II is 20 years old.

With a love of travel and experiencing new cultures, Severine Barras was recently welcomed to HHS as this year’s only foreign exchange student. A native of Switzerland, she will be spending the school year with host family Thom, Julie and Camille Elliott.

Sept. 8, 1994

Sept. 2 was a big day for the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office. Officers confiscated marijuana plants with an initial estimated street value of $300,000 and announced the addition of a K-9 unit. K-9 Ned accompanied Phillips County Sheriff Scott McBee and Undersheriff Rob Urbach as they raided a field northeast of Haxtun. The 150 plants, which were approximately 8 feet tall, were dispersed among the corn plants.

Blue lights in a purple background now highlight the original “Peerless” sign which was recently restored by Anderson Sign Co. of Ogallala, Nebraska. The restored sign was hung on the former theater building on Aug. 30.

Leon Atkins Motors has officially opened its Holyoke headquarters at 280 N. Sunflower Dr. after their building in Haxtun was destroyed by fire on Jan. 18.

 

Fifty Years Ago
Sept. 4, 1969

The lost and found department of The Enterprise still has 21 windbreakers, one pair of tennis shoes, two pairs baseball shoes, and a swim suit and towel set.

Streptococci infections (strep throat) continue to dominate the monthly communicable disease report of the Northeast Colorado Health Department. During August, disease reports for the tri-county area were Phillips 9, Sedgwick 13 and Yuma 23.

Family season tickets for all high school and junior high regularly scheduled home athletic events are now available. A family ticket is $15 and $10 for an individual.

Sept. 7, 1944

This year, the Christmas mailing period for both Army and Navy overseas forces is the same — Sept. 15-Oct. 15. After Oct. 15, no gift parcel may be mailed to a soldier without the presentation of a written request from him.

Farm real estate in Colorado is now selling for about 70% more than it did on the average from 1935-39, just before the beginning of the war, according to Dr. Roy N. Green, president of Colorado State College at Fort Collins.
