After a four-hour executive session of the Holyoke School Board on Sept. 24, board president Kris Camblin rescinded his appointment of Jeff Tharp to fill the board vacancy created with the resignation of Kim Killin in June. Camblin then appointed Nici Bishop, who will be administered the oath of office at the Oct. 7 board meeting. Tharp served two full terms as a board member and finished his service last November and was appointed to fill the board vacancy Aug. 19. A Sept. 17 call to Camblin indicated concern about the legality of Tharp’s appointment with regard to term limits.

Cassidy Hale, a freshman at Holyoke High School, has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, D.C., Nov. 14-16.

Oct. 1, 2009

It was reported at the East Phillips County Hospital District board meeting on Sept. 22 that Melissa Memorial Hospital has created a flu committee as a result of recent H1N1 cases in Holyoke.

Ballyneal Golf and Hunt Club in Holyoke has been ranked the 48th best golf course in the United States and 83rd best in the world by Golf Magazine in its biannual ranking of the Top 100 Courses in the U.S. and the World.

Oct. 6, 1994

Mike Gracey has qualified for the Big Bass World Championship after being declared Colorado’s winner with his 7.5-pound largemouth bass that he caught March 4 at Stalker Lake near Wray. The 1994 BBWC Finals will be held Nov. 4-5 in Orlando, Florida.

City Superintendent Garold Roberts’ resignation was announced at a special meeting of the Holyoke City Council on Sept. 27. Roberts will vacate the position Nov. 2.

Twenty-five years of automotive repair experience is going into the opening of Jack Radford’s new business in Holyoke, Jack’s Auto and Truck Repair. Radford has set up shop at 303 S. Worley Ave. in the building that was formerly Haskell Fertilizer.

 

Fifty Years Ago
Oct. 2, 1969

The grand opening for the “new” Holyoke Library, formerly the W.E. Heginbotham residence at 539 S. Baxter Ave., is set for Oct. 5.

The East Phillips County Hospital District board held a special meeting Sept. 26 to consider the changing of the contract, rules, regulations and bylaws, and operating agreement between the Lutheran Hospitals and Homes Society and the district board. It was decided by unanimous vote of the board to make application to the governing board of LHHS to allow osteopathic physicians the right to become members of the medical staff of Melissa Memorial Hospital.

When America’s history-making Apollo 11 mission roared off its Kennedy Space Center launchpad recently, Everett Rafert of Amherst was a member of the team which worked toward its success.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago
Oct. 5, 1944

A transaction was reported this week in which Harry Rife sold his Candy Nook business to the Kunkel Drug Store.

Mrs. Albert Pollock has been appointed director of the Phillips County Department of Public Welfare with offices in the courthouse.

Three years and four months is a long time to drive a car without a flat tire, and 22,766 miles is a long distance to drive a car without so much as a low tire, thinks a Holyoke man who has experienced these facts with his car.
