“Re:VISION” hit the market this week — a road map leading pastors and church leaders in a new direction and vision for ministry. This is the culmination of seven years of work for local pastor Gordon E. Penfold, D. Min., of First Baptist Church of Holyoke.

After a long stretch working short-handed and receiving part-time assistance from Haxtun officers, the Holyoke Police Department has added a new officer to its ranks. Daniel Coontz began work at HPD on Oct. 13.

Retirement has called Eldon McCormick after 40 years of operating McCormick Appliance Service in Holyoke and a total of 55 years in the local business community.

A nationwide shortage of the seasonal flu vaccine has been seen, and officials expect the vaccine to arrive in varied amounts for the next few weeks.

Paying tribute to the memory of children who are no longer living, the My Little Angel toy drive is being launched for the holiday season in Holyoke.

Downtown Holyoke welcomes a new store this week as Crazy Prices Store is scheduled to open Oct. 16 at 136 N. Interocean Ave. Owner Juan M. Salomon said they wanted to provide merchandise that Hispanics want that differs from other stores in town and to offer it at low prices.

Oct. 20, 1994

Bonnie Smith became the new ombudsman for Phillips County on July 1, replacing Marge Chandler, who retired after more than five years of service.

In an effort to curb the number of fatal drowning accidents each year in Colorado, a new law will take effect May 1, 1995, requiring all water-borne vessels, regardless of length, to be equipped with a wearable personal flotation device (life jacket) for each person on board. In the past, vessels under 16 feet weren’t required to carry wearable PDFs, only a throwable cushion or life-ring.

Human bowling ball and possibly a Velcro wall are the activities being considered for the GPRC Halloween party for junior high and high school students.

 

Fifty Years Ago
Oct. 16, 1969

Holyoke was hit by its first major snowstorm of the year last weekend, with snow depths reaching 10-12 inches on the level. Beet harvest was brought to a standstill because of the heavy snow and has been hampered even more by the additional 4-6 inches of new snow that fell here yesterday.

Mayor George A. Barker received word today from the director of the Department of Housing and Urban Development  that the workable plan submitted by the Housing Authority of Holyoke for a senior citizen village has been approved.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago
Oct. 19, 1944

With nearly 20 flying students using the Holyoke airport and several planes owned by local men in need of housing, the demand for hangars and services for plane owners, as well as those stopping here, the town council has decided to go ahead with plans for an igloo-shaped hangar large enough to accommodate five to seven planes and provide a small building for a keeper. The matter of a repair and service shop has not been definitely decided.

People who did not vote in the general election two years ago are not eligible to vote in the Nov. 7 election unless they register by Oct. 28, or 10 days before the election. In Colorado, the names of persons who did not vote in a general election are purged from the records. Residence within the county must be at least one year to be eligible to vote in the county.

In the last regular meeting of the Lions Club, it was decided to ask the county commissioners to operate and finance the Phillips County Fair next year.
