
The John Barbour farmstead was 13 miles east and 6 1/2 miles south of Holyoke. Grainland Co-op’s shuttle loader and circle track project has begun initial fill processes, with its first loads scheduled for early next year. Brand-new cement rail ties make up nearly 8,000 feet of track circling around the multimillion-dollar shuttle loader project northeast of Holyoke. Eight concrete silos provide nearly 1.4 million bushels of grain storage, and 110-car shuttle trains can utilize the circle track as they are loaded up with commodities.
After several months of negotiations with Kentec Communications Inc. of Sterling, Holyoke City Council made final arrangements for its agreement with the company at the Oct. 21 meeting. The agreement requires KCI to pay $135 per month to rent space on the Holyoke water tower for its broadband internet equipment.

Elisa Sagehorn, member of the Holyoke FFA chapter, recently received the American FFA Degree at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Oct. 24.
The 5 inches of wet snow that fell last week was enough to close the schools Oct. 22 as county roads became muddy.
Holyoke Police Department received two brand-new shields, or body bunkers, on Oct. 20 as part of a Northeast All Hazard Region Homeland Security Grant. They will keep one in Holyoke, and the other will go to Haxtun.

After operating Ag Tax Services in Sterling for 13 years, Chas Reynolds is branching out to bring Chas’ Accounting Service to Holyoke. The new business opened in the Westside Professional Building at 210 S. Sheridan Ave. on Oct. 21.
Maggie Rice has accepted the position of Phillips County Communications Center director and started in her new position on Oct. 24.
At their Oct. 31 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners announced that Phillips County joined with Logan County to form the Northeast Colorado Rural Health Network.

For the first time, the Re-1J school district administration has decided to hold parent-teacher conferences two half days instead of the one-day conferences held in the past. One reason for the two half-day sessions is that by going to school until noon, the day can be counted as a full day of school.
The annual Holly Daze fair will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4, at St. Patrick’s hall in Holyoke. This is the day, sponsored by the Extension Homemakers, when any individual or organization in the county can bring gift or decoration suggestions and display them for everyone to see. There will be demonstrations presented by the ladies of the homemaker clubs. Articles will then be sold, with the proceeds going to the Extension Homemakers Council.

Recent enactment by Congress of the Pace bill, modifying the terms under which the Rural Electrification Administration may make loans to qualified borrowers, has paved the way for construction of power lines to reach less-densely populated sections of our territory. The new legislation fixes the interest rate of all REA loans at a flat 2% and provides that borrowers may be given 35 years to amortize their loans where necessary to accomplish complete area electrification on a self-liquidating basis.
Concrete foundation has been built for a hangar, 64 by 60 feet, at the Holyoke Airport, and work on the superstructure will begin shortly. The hangar is designed to accommodate seven planes of the small type popular here and is to be of semicircular or igloo roof construction.
